In my opinion, the most important thing a private tutor can do for a student is give them the opportunity to make mistakes in a safe environment where they feel they won't be judged. Building confidence and supporting students to increase their self-esteem won't only help them in their school subjects, but is a valuable skill that will last them a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to genuinely care for the student. Because i feel when you care for the student it becomes very easy to build a rapport and teaching becomes more simple. I am a very adaptable person in general and i apply this in my tutoring as well. Every student is different and i think it is…

Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

The most important things I can do for students are to go through the problems with them step by step, to solve their problems in learning, and to prove they have the ability to solve the problems themselves. I have a PhD qualification in Materials Engineering and I am good at mathematics, engineering, and physics subjects. I have extensive…

Tutors can be a reason to guide the students in the right direction. Sometimes, a student might need a tiny little nudge to get them on track and tutors can be or are the right persons for that. A tutor can be a friend guiding the student in every obstacle they come across. A tutor can also be a role model for the students by creating a long…

Respecting students and appreciating all backgrounds is the most important thing to carry out as a tutor. I feel that teaching is not only about teaching knowledge, but also about shaping the way students feel and think about a certain subject or concept. My strength lies in creating a calm, yet enjoyable and comfortable study environment for…

I should be able to make learning fun for the student and make the student feel more confident while dealing with the subject. The student might slowly develop liking for the subject if they find it easy and interesting. The most important task that should be done is that the concept is clear for the student such that they don't ever feel the…

The most important things for a tutor is to provide them your trust and support. If you cannot do this, the student won't find you as a reliable and encouraging tutor and therefore, won't get the best out of their learning whilst damaging yourself as a tutor. I am a positive and calm tutor and I think that's an important strength because if a…

The most important thing that a tutor can do for the students is helping them improve their academics and achieve the highest goal in their ability. I believe that teachers/tutors make the greatest impact on a developing child or young adult's mind. Apart from the child's family, a teacher/tutor has the most influential face to face contact with a student, where it be as a mentor or as a friend. Hence, I strongly feel that tutors have the opportunity and responsibility to educate and develop a…

A tutor MUST be able to explain concepts to students in very different ways that allow them to understand a difficult topic. Sometimes teachers at school cannot personally cater to students, so tutors should strive to explain things in a very eloquent, logical manner so that the student can follow. Ability to relate. I will not be "above" them,…

Encouragement and patience. Inside RipponleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Spencer worked on understanding fractions, focusing on the meaning of numerators and denominators and exploring relationships between halves, quarters, and eighths using number lines.

In Year 9, Ollie reviewed his end-of-year maths exam to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, while Frankie concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and building confidence with trigonometry through targeted practice questions.

For Year 11, Alice focused on matrix operations—including transition matrices—and applied financial modelling skills to compound interest scenarios in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student lost marks on SAC extended response questions after "not quite understanding the questions"—they needed to slow down and read each question fully before answering.

Another senior student in Financial Modelling showed stress when working through log graph problems live; practicing under less pressure helped, but anxiety led to avoidance of challenging parts at first.

In Year 8 algebra, a student skipped showing steps—"he switched x and y when substituting points," causing sign errors that were hard to trace.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with place value and often relied on counting instead of recalling number facts, slowing progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ripponlea tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid tricky algebra—now, after working hard on expanding brackets and negative numbers, she's correctly tackling double-bracket problems with less hesitation.

Another high schooler came into sessions wanting more support on trigonometry but recently showed new independence by choosing tasks which simultaneous equations to try without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a student who'd struggled to finish homework now hands it all in early and checks her own spelling errors before showing the tutor her story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Glen Eira Road Campus.
