I really fell that a tutor should be a friend and not like a teacher so that student can easily approach them with their silly doubt without any fear and clear their concept thoroughly. I love to be with children and sometimes be like them and enjoy the life in a simple manner. This really makes a great bond between me and my students due to which…

Clarifying even the trivial of the doubts that the student possess maybe the biggest responsibility of the tutor. The tutor must assess a method to deliver the content to them. Patience and evaluating a discrete method for each of the individuals are the two most important characteristics a tutor must flaunt. The tutor must be able to teach in a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to believe and have faith in the student that they can learn and achieve anything they put their mind to. My strengths as a tutor include patience, understanding, and tolerance. I understand the way the student currently thinks and help them to bridge the gap to think in the way…

The most crucial aspect a tutor can offer a student is personalized guidance, tailoring their teaching to the individual's unique learning style and pace. An extremely patient manner is essential, particularly when dealing with math, as it demands a great deal of patience. I'm also very adaptable to any style of pace that the student might want, I…

Help and guide them in reaching their goals. Understanding the subject instead of scoring marks by byhearting. Support them not only in the subject knowledge but also in their social life. I think the most important is to be supportive, from experience the reason that most people struggle with learning is because they give up or don’t think they can. Hence encouragement is key and positive re-enforcement. I also believe that making the student comfortable around you and going through source material in an efficient manner can make…

I do think patience, good Communication Skills and the Ability to Make Students Visualise. Also the self-discipline. For one, the number of students working with tutors continues to grow. Two, working 1:1 with students is immensely gratifying, both for the tutor and tutee. And three, a few specific yet generalised characteristics become…

I tutor can do so much more than just help with studies and exams. A teacher is a person who is able to inspire his students. I believe that a teacher must be able to develop an interest in the heart of the student. So as a teacher our main motive should always be able to make the student motivated for studies. As I am a kind of people person who…

A tutor can increase a student's confidence in their abilities through consolidation of concepts. This is important as to do well in any subject, a student needs to believe in themselves and their capabilities. Passing on knowledge keeping in mind the strength, weaknesses and the time required for the student to grasp the content that is being communicated. The most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is tailor their teaching to the individual. Outside of a large class of students it becomes easier to change a lesson to suit a particular student, spending more time on a point when a student is struggling with it and ensuring that a topic is perfectly understood before moving on. I think…

The most important thing would probably be being able to form an understanding of how the student learns, and then being able to adjust lessons according to that. I think also just being patient for that student to have that light bulb moment, and then commending them when they do. In addition, just holding myself somewhat accountable for the…

Chris, Elsternwick

Inside RipponleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Spencer worked on understanding fractions, focusing on the meaning of numerators and denominators and exploring relationships between halves, quarters, and eighths using number lines.

In Year 9, Ollie reviewed his end-of-year maths exam to pinpoint strengths and areas for improvement, while Frankie concentrated on solving simultaneous equations and building confidence with trigonometry through targeted practice questions.

For Year 11, Alice focused on matrix operations—including transition matrices—and applied financial modelling skills to compound interest scenarios in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, one student lost marks on SAC extended response questions after "not quite understanding the questions"—they needed to slow down and read each question fully before answering.

Another senior student in Financial Modelling showed stress when working through log graph problems live; practicing under less pressure helped, but anxiety led to avoidance of challenging parts at first.

In Year 8 algebra, a student skipped showing steps—"he switched x and y when substituting points," causing sign errors that were hard to trace.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner struggled with place value and often relied on counting instead of recalling number facts, slowing progress during multi-step problems.

Recent Achievements

One Ripponlea tutor noticed a big change in a Year 10 student who used to avoid tricky algebra—now, after working hard on expanding brackets and negative numbers, she's correctly tackling double-bracket problems with less hesitation.

Another high schooler came into sessions wanting more support on trigonometry but recently showed new independence by choosing tasks which simultaneous equations to try without prompting.

Meanwhile, in primary years, a student who'd struggled to finish homework now hands it all in early and checks her own spelling errors before showing the tutor her story.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Elsternwick Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Adass Israel School - Glen Eira Road Campus.
