As a tutor, it's very important to understand the pace at which a student learns and to accustom themselves by providing a safe and informative learning space for the student. I'm very patient and I don't mind repeating a lesson and pacing myself. I'd like to think that I get along fairly well with the youth I am punctual and I have an eye for…

Being a student myself, i literally have lots of doubts that i would really want to clear and get an idea of the topics that i feel might trouble me a bit, so i feel that, a tutor must posses always be available to solve and manage all the doubts that the student can ponder upon. I can clearly understand the mindset of students that i have taught…

Most students believe that they are just naturally weak at a subject and just decide to hate it for that reason. A tutor who can help a student understand the concepts in a subject better will also help make the student like the subject better. That change in attitude towards the subject will make/help the student learn better and faster. I am…

One of the most important factors would be to never give up on your students, where it is your obligation as a tutor to try and understand the student's mentality and mindset and accommodate the teaching style to ensure the student understands the content rather than endorsing mindless memorization. I am a student myself, who learns at a mediocre…

A tutor should get to know his/her student very well and understand where is the student lacking, where does he/she need the help most, and plan accordingly. I have been giving private tuitions to students of grades 3 to 9 for the past 7 years. Which makes me an experienced tutor in terms of working with…

Helping students understand their potential and making students see that what they are learning is valuable are the most importantly things a tutor can do for a student. I create a safe space where they feel comfortable making mistakes, while teaching effective study strategies they can use beyond our sessions. My greatest strength as a tutor is…

I think if I was a student I would want my tutor to be less intimidating and focus more on building my confidence, not only in the topics that is being but also to participate and join in the learning experience whether my answers are right or wrong. My strength as a tutor would be the breaking down of complex topics using example and relatable…

The most important things is to always be there to help your student even if sometimes you don't know the answer to everything. You should understand that the students look up to you for help and be ready to help them whenever required. You should be ready to listen to any problem they might have and understand that each student is different and…

The first thing would be to establish a plan of goals and expectations and help the student identify their role in this plan. Once a tutor has an idea of the expectation of the parents/school/ students then only can progress take shape, and this might have many forms and variations as to how this is executed as the student grows or stalls. So,…

A tutor must be invested in a student's learning in order for the teaching and tutoring to be effective and positive for the student's experience. A tutor can approach learning often in different ways that are addressed in the classroom, meaning the student may find a learning style or approach that suits them better and one that they can apply…

Sometimes students are going through external things that may affect their progress. Slow progress does not always mean that they are not trying. As a teacher the first and foremost thing is to have patience. If your student is not in their comfort zone while they are learning no matter how good your grades are a student you can't be a good teacher.i always put myself in the student's place first and then I act like the teacher. Because only then i can understand how shall my approach be.…

The most important thing that can be done is to give as many resources as necessary. I say this because of all the tutors I have had, the most helpful was the one that gave me access to endless resources which constantly had me practicing my content which greatly assisted me in realising my weaknesses. I consider that the most important thing I could do for the student is to create a safe environment for them. A tutor is responsible for motivating a student in order to achieve excellent grades. Inside RivertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lara worked on graphing linear equations, finding gradients from tables and coordinates, and using the midpoint formula.

In Year 9, Ethan practised solving simultaneous equations by both substitution and elimination, as well as tackling worded problems that required forming and rearranging algebraic expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Mia focused on expanding and factorising quadratic equations, then used the quadratic formula to solve for unknowns in standard form.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student repeatedly skipped writing out full algebraic steps when rearranging trigonometric ratios, leading to confusion between numerators and denominators—"I had to keep reminding her to write out the whole equation before she tried to solve."

In Year 9 statistics, another found it difficult to organise data in Excel, losing time hunting for functions rather than analysing results.

A Year 8 learner often left worded questions incomplete, misreading which triangle side was required, then hesitated to use provided formula sheets.

After setbacks with negative numbers in simultaneous equations (Year 11), calculator reliance increased and confidence dropped mid-task.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Riverton noticed a Year 10 student who previously hesitated to attempt algebraic questions now starts each one independently, writing out every step before asking for feedback.

In a recent high school session, another student who struggled with interpreting linear graphs was able to accurately draw lines from equations and explain the meaning of slope and intercept without prompts.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 student who used to guess at place value questions has begun talking through her reasoning out loud, using number tables confidently to find answers.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverton Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Riverton Primary School.
