I think the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach him different things while motivating the student and making sure he/she/they understand the essence of the teaching so that they can apply it in daily life rather than asking them to memorize different things. This way the students not only get good grades but also store whatever…

The most important things I can do are to boost a student’s confidence, foster independent thinking, and help them develop problem-solving skills. I aim to support them academically while also helping them believe in their own abilities. I want every student to feel seen, supported, and capable of success, no matter where they’re starting…

Keeping them interested in the subject, making them believe that it's not just about marks, but understanding. Making them to fall in love with the subject. Doing that subject should make them feel happy, not anxious. I focus more on logic and intuition, rather than memorizing. Being someone who used to fail regularly before becoming one of the…

It is important for a tutor to understand their students' learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses and adapt each lesson accordingly to specific students. With this, students are more likely to understand what they are trying to learn. As they continue to solidify their knowledge through tutoring, their confidence will boost and hopefully,…

If I can make a student begin thinking more about the subject than just a grade to obtain, I would have felt that I made one more curious person. Curiosity is the root of knowledge in my opinion, and it would be the seed that I can share with the students that I engage with. I believe, they would lie in science, especially with regard to my…

Finding the right method to educate a student. The way you present your working and explanation should always suit the students learning style. Only then can the student understand the concept in depth and apply their learning to a new question. As I was once a private tutee, I understand how the tutor should explain concepts in a clear and…

Tutors have two roles, One is to actively support the student who might be struggling to cope up with their peers and/or looking to improve their performance. The second is to make the student learn in a different environment from their school. Schools have multiple children and every child has some issue they are facing. As a tutor sitting 1-1…

I think one of the most important things about tutoring is to help students not only understand what they need to do, but also why they need to do it, alongside techniques to perform well in assessments. A tutor needs to be reminded that it's their student they have to make better, not themselves, hence most of the time we should end up giving tasks to students and let them solve them themselves. Only to interrupt them when they are stuck or can't get over a problem, we should remember that we are more of assistants rather than problem solvers…

I think the most important things a tutor should do for a student is to encourage the student to do better rather than to aim for perfect grades. Every improvement, regardless of the extent, is an improvement and it should be appreciated. A tutor should also prepare for the lessons before hand and have a lesson goal/outline to keep on track. The best thing a tutor can provide their student is to give them the guidance and inspiration so as to spark a curiosity to want to learn more about the subject without any external guidance. A tutor should be able to build confidence for a student in a subject that is not their strongest. By building this confidence, students can go into exams with a clear understanding of the subject. For the student’s future, the confidence from succeeding in a subject can flow into other aspects of their lives, allowing them to help others. I am…

Inside RivervaleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Isla focused on times tables recall and worked through measurement activities using practical examples.

For Year 8, Jack revised Pythagoras' theorem and tackled trigonometry questions to find unknown angles.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Zoe prepared for her maths test by practicing simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, then drew linear graphs to consolidate understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student, when revising simultaneous equations, "relied on a calculator for basic steps," making it harder to spot small errors in working.

In Year 10 Chemistry, notes were incomplete and key cycle steps were missing—meaning last-minute revision was less effective before assessments.

A senior student practicing circle proofs often left side labels unmatched, which caused confusion during exams.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student struggled to convert mm to cm due to skipping over the reference table provided in her workbook.

When confidence dropped after setbacks, another high schooler hesitated to attempt harder worded problems alone.

Recent Achievements

One Rivervale tutor noticed a Year 11 student who'd previously been hesitant with trigonometry now tackling exam-style questions without help, even choosing the correct rule for triangle similarity on her own.

Another high school student moved from confusion about algebraic rearrangement to solving for x independently and quickly, showing real initiative by checking her answers before asking for feedback.

In Year 7, a student who often guessed at graphing tasks last term is now confidently identifying bar graph features and explaining them aloud—last session she labelled all axes accurately without any prompting.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ruth Faulkner Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rivervale Primary School.
