I think an important role tutor must be able to do is to be able to adaptable in their teaching style to cater to the needs of students. Additionally being relatable and exploring how this knowledge can be expanded to world wide applications. I believe tutors need to make strong relationships with both students in order for them to feel…

The most important thing a biology tutor can do for the student is to believe in them and show encouragement. Self-esteem can be extremely vulnerable during schooling years, and tutors have the power to enhance their students' level of self-confidence and sense of self-efficacy. When I believe in their potential, work with their strengths, support…

In my opinion the most important things a biology tutor can offer a student is confidence and guidance. This is because as a tutor, building a student's confidence can directly impact their attitude towards learning and how well they can achieve the marks they are aiming for. Similarly, by giving guidance to a student, not only prompts them into…

A tutor determines the level of understanding a student develops in their subjects. Tutors also influence the personality of the student by how they motivate and inspire the student by showing their own passion for the subjects. One of the most important things is that a good tutor can make students like the subject they disliked and give s fresh…

The most important thing as a biology tutor is to help students connect to what they are learning. It is the job of the tutor to differentiate instruction based on the learning preferences of the students. Further, a tutor reinforces what the students have been learning at school. I am a teacher with 15 years of teaching experience. My last school…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

The best thing that a biology tutor can do for a student is not to regurgitate information - that can be found by reading a book, or browsing the internet; but to inspire. I believe that a perspective can be most powerfully shared by someone who has seen and understood, who can empathize with the struggles that are necessary to get to seeing the…

I think the most important thing a biology tutor can do for a student is to help them understand the course content- so they can pass assessment- and also to help them understand other aspects of the subject they need or want to understand, either for the sake of curiosity or because they have some use for it. It is best if this understanding is…

Tutoring is mainly about facilitating the students understanding of concepts, but the tutor should also aim to foster a drive in the student to understand why they are struggling with the respective topic and a will to seek a solution on their own. The tutor should eventually seek to equip students with self-awareness and a drive for…

Similarly, every tutor needs to be prepared before they enter in classroom to teach because it will help tutors to express their views in such a way that students can learn and understand easily. Friendly, Responsible, Teaching in…

Tutors fill a different role than teachers and parents, and that puts them in a unique position to support students. Personal relationships are foundational to student success -- the more connected a student feels to his or her tutor, the more the tutor creates trust and respect, essential ingredients for students to learn well. When a biology…

Local Reviews

My daughter and I are both very happy with Thibault. She has only had one session with him but said he was good at explaining and he was able to answer her questions. He was also encouraging, punctual and very polite. We are very happy to continue with him.

Inside RiverwoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Emily worked through negative and fractional indices as well as reviewing measurement concepts like area and volume in preparation for an upcoming topic test.

For Year 10, Jacob focused on revising functions—specifically cubic curves—and practiced curve sketching using assignment-style questions.

Meanwhile, Year 3 student Raeed explored subtraction strategies by counting backwards and compared numbers up to the thousands using greater than and less than symbols.

Recent Challenges

A Year 12 student tackling trigonometry struggled to select the correct rule in multi-step problems; "highlighting key words helped, but remembering formulas was still a hurdle."

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student repeatedly skipped writing working for algebra, which led to confusion and small errors that took extra time to trace.

For one Year 7 student, forgetting to bring notes meant missing connections between lessons—she found herself unable to apply previous strategies when new worded questions appeared.

After setbacks on past paper questions, a Year 10 learner hesitated to attempt unfamiliar problems without guidance, leading to slower progress and shaken confidence.

Recent Achievements

A Riverwood tutor noticed Liam, a Year 12 student, now tackles advanced trigonometry questions without any help—he used to need frequent hints but recently completed several HSC problems solo and could explain each step.

Charlotte in Year 11 has started breaking down complex multi-step financial maths tasks on her own, using strategies like "talking aloud" and back-checking her work instead of rushing or skipping steps as she did before. She is now working independently.

Meanwhile, Matthew in Year 3 is not just solving worded problems faster; he's begun identifying which operation to use himself rather than waiting for prompts from the tutor. This new independence stands out.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are more than happy with Kancelot. He and Rohan seem to get along well, he is punctual and polite , and is also helping Rohan improve his maths skills.

Yes, everything is going well and Avishag is GREAT!  She is clear, direct, and no-nonsense, which is exactly what Is needs (can't get away with anything), and yet this is balanced with underlying kindness (motivated to do well).  It's not something I can describe well in words, but Isabelle definitely responds well to Avi's method.  She has improved to passing the most recent test (from massively nowhere near passing), and I can see her confidence in math has improved, too.  She was shocked to suddenly find herself helping some of her friends work through questions that they couldn't understand, and enjoyed the feeling, so that is an achievement!  Yes, she still has a long way to go, but we're off to a good start.  It's so good to have Avi reinforce methods of organization and skills that don't register for Is when I mention them, too!  We are both very, very grateful to have Avi help Is through this.

We are extremely happy with Estephanie.   She has managed to hit exactly the right note.   We are just looking for Isabel to understand some basic principles and Estaphie is managing this with patience and skill.    I cannot speak highly enough of Estaphanie.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Riverwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.
