I think the most important thing a tutor can do is provide an opportunity for the student to thrive. To establish belief in them, as typically students seek out tutoring as they believe they are not 'good' at a subject. Being the one person there that cheers them on is a powerful thing. Providing alternate methods for students to learn is…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make sure a student can fully understand topics that have previously been difficult. I do not think it is not enough for a tutor to simply talk through the topic with the student and expect them to understand it. A tutor should explain the topic to the student and then, after more study…

Believing in your student has to be one of the most important things a tutor can do as you help the student know that nothing is impossible and they can do it all. I also think patience is also important as everyone learns differently and at various paces. I believe I am easy to communicate with. In terms of communicating with parents, my…

Providing a student with the fundamental skills they need to persevere and be confident in their own ability to achieve. I believe the most important thing for a tutor to do is to guide their students through a difficult concept step by step, and lend them as much assistance as necessary. Ultimately, the goal is to help the students to succeed. I have very recently graduated from high-school, thus I have a fresh understanding of what is taught and how it was taught.…

It is very easy for students to feel disheartened if initial targets are not achieved, and hence as a tutor it is important for me to continue motivating students to reach their goals. Making sure the student actually understands the content being taught. A lot of students have been in that situation where a teacher may ask the student whether they understood the topic presented, and even if they didn't, they would say they did to not slow the class down or bring attention to themselves. This is what tutoring in my belief should…

Danielle, Rochedale South

Inside Rochedale SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Alice practised adding and subtracting fractions with both like and unlike denominators, as well as converting improper fractions to mixed numbers.

In Year 9, Jack focused on algebraic skills including simplifying, factorising, and performing operations on expressions in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah tackled financial maths by working through problems involving simple interest calculations and using real-life scenarios such as credit card purchases.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Maths, a student often left reports unfinished or with unclear structure; "report needs to be written up in a proper structure," one tutor noted.

In Year 8, another arrived unprepared—without a notebook or working calculator—which slowed the start of geometry lessons.

A Year 10 learner frequently practised only familiar textbook questions at home, missing out on harder problem-solving types and leaving gaps when tackling quadratic equations by completing the square.

One primary student hesitated to show working for surface area problems, sometimes erasing mistakes rather than correcting them—making it difficult to track their thinking mid-lesson.

Recent Achievements

A Rochedale South tutor noted that a Year 11 student, who previously relied on memorising steps for equations, learned to set up and solve problems independently using proper methods—a real shift in approach.

Another high school student not only completed all revision materials but also corrected common mistakes in compound interest, showing greater care and accuracy than before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who often lost focus managed to stay engaged throughout the session and eagerly used props to understand 3D shapes in 2D drawings. The lesson finished with her confidently explaining how she solved the worksheet questions out loud.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Logan North Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Peter's Primary School.
