Prepare them for independent learning. If a student can understand the process of learning then they really don't need any guidance and can improve on their own. My strengths are; - Patience when a student is struggling to understand or grasp a question. - Gauging the students understanding in real time using open ended questions. -…

The most important thing to being a tutor is the passion towards teaching and the motivation to get the best results from his/her students. It is also crucial for a tutor to be friendly and approachable to every student. A tutor should be available to help the student cope with any difficulties, even if this requires an extra personal approach to…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to impart the learnings you have acquired through your previous schooling and to show the tutee how it will be applied in real life. What is the point of this concept? And also relate to them in terms of their interests, that these concepts can be applied to their interests. My strengths are…

The most important thing is that they understand the theories behind certain topics. Especially in maths where many educational systems and tutors would just show the formulas in answering questions and not how they got to the formula in the first place. If they do understand the theories, then everything else will come easy. I have prior…

Being empathetic and understanding is one of the most important qualities a tutor can have. A good tutor will make sure that the student understands a particular concept rather than just learn how to solve a particular problem because that way the student can apply the learning in different situations and come up with ways to find the solution by…

The most important thing a tutor can do in my opinion is be patient with a student and try and understand the problem from their perspective. By doing this, you are able to see more clearly the issue that they might be having. I also believe that finding the best learning method for a student is a key part of the role as a tutor, and this will…

The most important thing a tutor can do is be a mentor. Students need a guide who can not only help them academically but also go a little extra and use their experience to teach them essential skills like time management. These little details play a major role in the tutee's overall success. My strengths as a tutor include deep understanding of…

The most important thing a tutor does for his students is boosting the morale of their weak students and providing them assistance accordingly because every student has a different grasping level so, unlike a teacher, the tutor has to modify his teaching methods and strategies according to his students. Creating an environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes and exploring ideas they may be unsure about is one of the most important things a tutor can do. I believe this process of problem solving is what learning is centred around, it ensured students retain the information they learn and know it for what it is instead of just to…

Approach tutoring with an open mind. Some students can easily grasp the concepts while the others it may take time or a special approach for them to understand.Making the student feel comfortable is very important to allow them to express themselves and feel free to ask if they don't understand. Explaining why things are the way they are instead of…

A tutor should be able to and simplify a particular concept making it easier for a student to understand. A tutor should also be able to adapt and improve teaching styles depending on the student and their progress. It…

One of the most significant roles I believe a tutor can play for a student is to inspire a vision for a brighter future and a better life. A tutor serves as a guiding light, helping students navigate not only academic challenges but also shaping their path forward in life, extending beyond the boundaries of subject-specific problems. For me,…

The tutor should act like a robust bridge between the student and knowledge. He/she should guide the student in achieving erudition by showing the correct path. Tutors should also try to develop interest in students for subjects and it should not be confined to the prescribed curriculum. On the other hand it is prerogative for the tutor to realize…

I believe tutoring helps students develop a genuine love for learning. There are 2 characteristics a tutor needs to achieve this. Firstly, the tutor should have an open and friendly personality. The most important thing that a tutor can provide for a student is support and motivation. When a student is struggling, they have low self-efficacy and motivation to engage with the subject. What is important is to use this knowledge to provide tutoring in a way that is relaxed and engaging. In addition the tutor should always value and strive to…

Inside RockleaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Sam worked through simultaneous equations and expanded brackets, focusing on clear step-by-step solutions.

For Year 11, Ava tackled trigonometric functions including sine and cosine waves using unit circles, as well as converting between degrees and radians.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Jack concentrated on differentiation rules—specifically the chain rule, quotient rule, and product rule—to strengthen calculus foundations with targeted examples from recent assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11, one student repeatedly lost track of numbers mid-calculation during algebra tasks; as the tutor noted, "numbers would slip out of her head as she was solving problems and she would have to backtrack," which often led to correct concepts but wrong answers.

In a Year 8 session, a student fell back on simply adding or multiplying any given numbers when stuck, instead of working through problem steps—a short-term crutch that limited deeper understanding.

After-school fatigue in a senior student left him freezing up or disengaged at key moments, making it harder to complete multi-step questions under pressure.

Recent Achievements

In a Rocklea tutoring session, Zoe, a high schooler with ADHD and dyscalculia, experimented with colour-coded notes and visual cues—she now finds it easier to interpret complex expressions and even solved cross multiplication problems that previously tripped her up.

Shakya, also in high school, showed a shift from uncertainty to self-reliance; despite being unwell, she completed all her homework independently and applied linear equations to real-world scenarios like GPS signals.

Meanwhile, Rama in Year 5 surprised her tutor by generating creative sentences quickly when prompted—something she'd hesitated with before—and spelling advanced words without help.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Corinda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rocklea State School.
