A student approaches a physics tutor outside school just so they can understand the subject in a better way. As a tutor, I believe that the most important thing I can do for my students is to make them trust in me and eventually the subject because only then they would put in efforts to overcome their difficulties. As a tutor, I am responsible…

Besides helping them understand and learn a topic, the tutor should also help the student master the topic through mastery learning. Mastery learning is a way of designing units of work so that each set of tasks focuses on a particular learning objective and students must master a task to move onto the next one. The tutor should also help the…

Ensuring that the student enjoys and understands the learning process better. That failure is a part of not only education but life and that the biggest growth can result from failure (eg J. K. At any point, I should be patient and follow their speed. If I tutor one person at a time, the biggest advantage would be being able to figure out in detail what they are struggling with. A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. I think the most important thing a physics tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental…

Tutors should give confidence to students and always have a positive attitude. Positive reinforcements must be given after the student successfully completes a task. I think a physics tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel…

I feel the strengths as a physics tutor are to help my students to set a high expectation, which motivates them to work towards that. Another strength would be to be honest and transparent with students about how to succeed. And as a tutor, it is our duty to make sure that students know you believe in them and want them to succeed. I'm a team…

The most important things a physics tutor can do for a student is to inspire his inner confidence and nurture his talent. It is worthwhile to bring students to the realization that, nothing is impossible when they apply their minds to anything. Nurturing young minds and sowing seeds that will engender innovation is the ultimate role of a tutor. In…

Inside Rose ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Naethan revised index laws and practised simplifying fractions for his upcoming test.

In Year 10, Emma tackled quadratic equations by practising completing the square and applying these methods to real-life problem-solving.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Sarah focused on Unit 1 Psychology, reviewing main theories in biological psychology and consolidating key vocabulary and concepts in preparation for her assessment.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 mathematics, one student often completed fraction calculations mentally rather than writing out steps. As noted, "mistakes are barely detected and noticed when you go back and check," leading to lost marks even though the concepts were understood.

In a senior maths session, a student arrived without their calculator or textbook, making it difficult to attempt assigned tasks.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 learner hesitated to use the method requested by exam questions—opting for shortcuts instead—and missed key working that teachers look for in marking schemes.

Each of these habits resulted in avoidable confusion or missed opportunities during lessons.

Recent Achievements

One Rose Park tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to wait for help now takes initiative with challenging maths problems, trying them independently before asking questions.

In Year 11, Ariana recently completed all her assigned tutoring homework and managed to solve quadratic equations using different strategies without guidance—something she found confusing just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student has started eagerly discussing the concepts from her reader in sessions, moving from passive listening to sharing her ideas and questions about the text.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

It is a great pleasure for us too, to see Vas enjoying his lessons, and trying his utmost hardest to listen and catch up. This is all due to Jake too, he is a very big favourite to Vas, he loves his lessons with him, as he explains everything they are doing till Vas understands.

Things are going great - James got over 90% in a recent test, and said it felt easy because he understood it. That's what I want to hear.

James has got off to a good start-in his first test this week, he got 91% in his specialist exam.  Matthew is able to work through all the challenging questions with James and ensure that he understands the theory behind the maths.   I definitely feel that James has commenced Semester 2 with a more positive approach to Specialist Maths and I look forward to seeing improved results.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Norwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rose Park Primary School.
