The ability to understand the student's likes and dislikes, this allows the tutor to change his/her teaching style to match the student's path of understanding and through this the student is more likely to learn and benefit from the lesson. This is crucial in the student's journey and one of the main characteristics that a tutor should have. My…

As a tutor, you need to know that the student might be scared to attempt that particular subject and face his/her weakness. Thus, you should make the student feel comfortable enough to communicate to you about his problems and be reassured that you will help him/her…

A tutor's main focus should be on helping the student improve their abilities and assisting them in overcoming their weaknesses. Good communication and a good understanding are essential aspects in ensuring a tutor is able to focus on the student's weaknesses and help them improve in the areas they most need to work on. Most importantly, a tutor…

I believe the role of a tutor is to help build a student’s confidence by being willing to share their own experiences in order to show them they are not alone. I also think having patience and being flexible is essential for a mentor to have, to understand that teaching and mentoring can require a long time and should accept that everyone is…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is firstly enhance their knowledge. A tutor can be a best friend at times. Not every time we need to make our students just do their studies. The biggest thing a tutor can contribute is his/her time. For a student getting access to his/her tutor at any time with any hurdle is the biggest thing that he/she needs. So I guess being available at all times for a student is the biggest…

A tutor can help a student to gain confidence. Usually students lose confidence and thus lose interest in a subject. Mathematics, being really important for career opportunities, is an interesting subject, we just need the right support at the right time and that's what tutors are there for. Confidence and hard work is the key to succeed in any…

Inside Rouse HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Daniel worked on **trigonometry concepts including SOHCAHTOA and special angles**, as well as revising the ASTC quadrants and practicing quadratic equations through factorisation and the quadratic formula.

In Year 11, Sarah focused on **binomial expansions using Pascal's triangle patterns and factorials**, reviewed solving simultaneous equations by substitution and elimination, and briefly explored imaginary numbers to clarify square roots of negatives.

Year 12 student Jessica tackled **differentiation rules such as chain rule versus product rule**, with in-depth practice identifying when to use each method, and also applied trigonometric identities to solve proof questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's tendency to skip writing steps in trigonometric proofs led her to lose track of signs and ASTC quadrant rules, which meant she sometimes wrote "None" for questions requiring detailed justification.

In Year 8 algebra, another student was seen blurting out answers without using pen and paper, resulting in confusion about how she arrived at solutions—especially with like terms and fractions.

A Year 5 student repeatedly left homework incomplete; checking her notebook revealed missed algebraic practice, causing further gaps in understanding BIDMAS and ratios.

Negative self-talk ("I'm stupid") frequently followed mistakes across all levels, undermining confidence during quizzes.

Recent Achievements

One Rouse Hill tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid double-checking her work now regularly backchecks her solutions, catching small errors herself during quizzes.

Another high schooler, after struggling with trigonometric proofs and often waiting for hints, has begun tackling these questions independently and will now attempt each step before asking for help.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who previously panicked at long multiplication is starting to verbalise her thinking process and willingly attempts answers aloud, even when unsure. In one session, she completed every multiplication problem using the written method without needing reassurance.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Vinegar Hill Memorial Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Rouse Hill Public School.
