Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

To get them engaged and interested in a subject or topic. Although it is good to just teach the student how to pass the exam, I believe that by truly engaging and motivating a student they will get the most reward and the best results from their work. I have very strong communication skills and have constantly proved to be able to build a rapport…

Building the trust between the tutor and the student is what I believe it is most important. I felt that if I didn't build the trust with my students, then no matter how much I try, they will not improve. Therefore, building trust - looking confident and knowing what I am doing. My strength is making sure the students understand the concepts.…

A tutor can clearly identify the strengths and weaknesses of students and guide them accordingly. He should focus on the strengths and minimise their weaknesses. This is very important as it gives a clear direction to the students. This can also help them realise what career path would be good for them. A tutor should also be able to help students…

Learning can be spilt into 3 parts. First being simply understanding the content without worrying about exams. Second being revising and coming up questions possible from the content and getting a deeper understanding. Third is looking at the exam questions and how to form the answer to get maximum marks. I am aware of different styles of learning…

A tutor should always remember that their purpose is to help the student understand and love the subject and not do the work for them. They should try to help the student gain passion and curiosity for the concepts they learn. This will help them study and ace the subject. Furthermore, I believe that the most important thing a tutor should have…

A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

As a tutor, I think it is very important to make sure that a student does not lose hope. Even in moments of distress, it is my responsibility that the student does not lose confidence in his abilities. Losing confidence or hope is the worst thing that can happen before an exam. It is also important to develop a trusting relationship with a…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is give them the confidence to tackle questions by themselves. This is done by not doing the questions for the students, rather assisting their attempt at the questions, giving insight into what your approach would look like. A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I am proud of my ability to teach and explain concepts to others effectively and thoroughly, which I…

Motivating them is probably the most important, as students can be brilliant but fall behind quickly if they do not have the drive to improve. I think that a tutor also needs to have multiple different ways of approaching a question as a student might not be able to grasp a particular one. Furthermore, I believe that generically working through…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is act as a motivation for them to achieve their personal best. I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

Inside Rushcutters BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by tackling a story called 'The Dragon,' practising phonics for unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 9, Maddison worked through trigonometry problems including finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles as well as bearings, using both classwork and extension exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on factorising quadratic expressions and reviewed key concepts in perimeter and area during maths homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed ongoing reluctance to write out working for maths problems, especially with decimals and fractions—he tried to solve everything in his head, which led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing answers.

In Year 11, messy or incomplete pen-and-paper notes during algebraic manipulation made it difficult to track errors or revise later.

Another senior student preparing for exams struggled with organizing her revision, sometimes relying on formula recall without consistently checking each step; this resulted in simple but costly mistakes on quizzes.

For a Year 3 learner, avoiding reading comprehension tasks too quickly meant missing key points, affecting confidence after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Rushcutters Bay tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to tackle unfamiliar maths problems, now brings forward her own questions from class and has just scored 98% on her latest assignment after independently organising data into stem and leaf plots.

A high schooler who used to quietly struggle with bearings and probability recently took the initiative to jot down specific topics she wanted help with before the lesson, then worked through those sections confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from skipping tricky division questions to asking for step-by-step explanations until he can solve them accurately himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Grammar School - Edgecliff Preparatory School.
