Get students to study for more than just exams. By working with the student, I will hand him/her a solution to the problem. For all the simplification, analysis and induction of knowledge points, these skills can be applied to every activity in life. By cultivating his/her set of logical thinking, when he/she faces difficulties in the future,…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to build their confidence in being able to attempt completely unfamiliar problems. This demonstrates the foundation of their basics and will take them a long way regardless of their chosen field. I generally try to explain concepts with various analogies instead of just showing the proper…

Give the students the right studying tools (like time management or exam preparation for example). Stduents have to understand that being a successful at school isn't about being naturally gifted, but rather about being driven and methodical. I used to be a struggling student in highschool but with the right methods I eventually managed to make…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

A tutor should always understand the level of understanding of a particular subject by a student, so that he/she can start teaching from the basics if necessary. I am people-friendly. I know English, Tamil, Chinese, and German, so I can speak in a way students can understand the topics clearly. Also, I am strong in my fundamentals, so I can teach…

The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. The tutor should also be kind and attentive towards the children. I am very comfortable around children, and I tend to make them comfortable too. I also like to play with certain tips and tricks so that…

Mental support Always be active to answer questions (even in off work periods of the day) Make a good plan of what the session will be all about before it starts. Openmind at work ... Try different methods and examples to communicate the concepts. Let the student work the problems on their own and then try to guide them to the answers without…

Again, providing help academically is important, however, everyone who is smart can do that easily. However, that's not everything being a tutor is about. A tutor needs to have the supportive manner, encouraging the student verbally would be one of many ways to help. And as for helping with their difficulties when it comes to homework, tutors…

I think an important thing for a tutor is to not tell the student the answer but help them learn how to achieve the answer themselves. Incorporating coaching into tutoring allows the student to learn how to do it independently when the tutor is not around. The most important thing a tutor can do is to ignite a student's curiosity and passion for learning. When a student finds joy in the process, success naturally follows. Inside Rushcutters BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by tackling a story called 'The Dragon,' practising phonics for unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 9, Maddison worked through trigonometry problems including finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles as well as bearings, using both classwork and extension exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on factorising quadratic expressions and reviewed key concepts in perimeter and area during maths homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed ongoing reluctance to write out working for maths problems, especially with decimals and fractions—he tried to solve everything in his head, which led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing answers.

In Year 11, messy or incomplete pen-and-paper notes during algebraic manipulation made it difficult to track errors or revise later.

Another senior student preparing for exams struggled with organizing her revision, sometimes relying on formula recall without consistently checking each step; this resulted in simple but costly mistakes on quizzes.

For a Year 3 learner, avoiding reading comprehension tasks too quickly meant missing key points, affecting confidence after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Rushcutters Bay tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to tackle unfamiliar maths problems, now brings forward her own questions from class and has just scored 98% on her latest assignment after independently organising data into stem and leaf plots.

A high schooler who used to quietly struggle with bearings and probability recently took the initiative to jot down specific topics she wanted help with before the lesson, then worked through those sections confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from skipping tricky division questions to asking for step-by-step explanations until he can solve them accurately himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Grammar School - Edgecliff Preparatory School.
