The most crucial factors, in my opinion, are boosting the student's self-esteem, ensuring that they comprehend the material rather than merely memorizing it, and fostering an environment where they feel free to make mistakes. A good tutor not only helps with grades but also helps students develop problem-solving skills they can carry forward.…

The most important thing a tutor can give a student is confidence in their capabilities, As one of my tutors did for me. It is really really important to make the students feel confident when they are right and not making them feel like they did something wrong. My strengths lie in being patient and understanding while being fully immersed in…

I think that having someone you can rely on to assist in achieving new personal bests is incredibly important for students who are being tutored. It's not just about improving grades, but building confidence and skills that can assist in other areas of life. Be their friend and role model. Students have already enough to deal with in school. They need someone to listen to them and help them to clarify all their doubts. In a nutshell, I think a tutor must be : --> A friend --> An academic trainer --> A mentor --> A planner As a tutor, i focus more on an overall development than just focusing on the…

Teaching them how to study is the key. Helping them to get better grades is definitely important, but teaching them the method to study is more important. Since I have just completed the accelerated Maths Method with a score of 99, I am still very fresh and familiar with the contents. I am also bilingual; I am fluent in both English and Mandarin.…

The three most important things a tutor can do for a student are providing personalized support, fostering a growth mindset, and promoting effective study habits. Firstly, personalized support tailors lessons to the student's specific needs, addressing their weaknesses and enhancing their strengths. Secondly, instilling a growth mindset encourages…

Understand them. Be able to see what it is that a student needs and what they are good at. I think a tutor needs a lot of empathy and needs to be able to understand how each student’s minds work and find the best way to teach them the subjects. I am very patient with students. I empathize with them since I remember very well what it is to be in…

The clever tutor can know whether the student understands the information or not. He should get that without waiting for the student to tell him. As a result, he should redeliver the information but in a new way. I usually link between the theory and its application. I am interested in finding new interactive tutoring strategies. I try to deliver…

For me, the most important thing a tutor can do is help the student feel more confident — not just with the subject, but in themselves. I think we sometimes forget how big of a difference it makes when someone believes they can actually do it. I really try to celebrate the small wins — whether they’ve just understood a tough concept or even…

I believe the most important things a tutor can do for a student go beyond just teaching content. A tutor should help a child feel capable--- when students believe in themselves, everything else becomes easier. It's important to break concepts down simply, meet students where they are, and help them move forward step by step without overwhelm.…

From what I have been taught from my previous teacher, I believe that the most important thing for a tutor is their professional job ethnics. It means that a tutor needs to provide students with accurate knowledge and full effort to help students truly understand and solve the puzzle easily. What a tutor teaches needs to be revised to examine…

A tutor must be patient and understanding. Every child has their own way of learning. Therefore, a tutor must distinguish the students way of absorbing techniques and information, and implement these strategies for further sessions. A tutor must be able to relate to their students. More often than not a student may not understand a task first…

Inside Rushcutters BayTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Taiki focused on reading comprehension by tackling a story called 'The Dragon,' practising phonics for unfamiliar words, and then writing sentences using new vocabulary.

In Year 9, Maddison worked through trigonometry problems including finding angles and sides in right-angled triangles as well as bearings, using both classwork and extension exercises.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Olivia concentrated on factorising quadratic expressions and reviewed key concepts in perimeter and area during maths homework support.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student showed ongoing reluctance to write out working for maths problems, especially with decimals and fractions—he tried to solve everything in his head, which led to missed steps and confusion when reviewing answers.

In Year 11, messy or incomplete pen-and-paper notes during algebraic manipulation made it difficult to track errors or revise later.

Another senior student preparing for exams struggled with organizing her revision, sometimes relying on formula recall without consistently checking each step; this resulted in simple but costly mistakes on quizzes.

For a Year 3 learner, avoiding reading comprehension tasks too quickly meant missing key points, affecting confidence after setbacks.

Recent Achievements

One Rushcutters Bay tutor noticed that a Year 10 student, previously hesitant to tackle unfamiliar maths problems, now brings forward her own questions from class and has just scored 98% on her latest assignment after independently organising data into stem and leaf plots.

A high schooler who used to quietly struggle with bearings and probability recently took the initiative to jot down specific topics she wanted help with before the lesson, then worked through those sections confidently.

Meanwhile, a younger student has shifted from skipping tricky division questions to asking for step-by-step explanations until he can solve them accurately himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Kings Cross Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Sydney Grammar School - Edgecliff Preparatory School.
