If I can make a student feel at ease through the process of learning and eventually remove the stigma of some subjects being ‘too hard’. Then they can dive into any learning situation where they’ll know that if they take their time and try hard, they can do it, because they’ve done it before! Im patient and relatable, creating a…

As a tutor, the most important thing to do is ensure the student is confident with their taught content. This is achieved initially by committing to your students work along-side them. Following…

I am a patient tutor who has worked as one-on-one class and small class teaching. I always encourage them in lesson so that they won't feel the subject is…

Not give the answers but help support the learning process and give guidance when the child needs it most. There is a difference between doing all the work for the child and actually teaching how the problem can be approached and observing how the student does it him/herself. If the child is stuck on a concept, it is my responsibility to help the…

There are many important things that a tutor can do for a student, one of which is regardless of our personal feelings, it is important that we should work with each of our student to ensure their success. Act like you are happy to be there and see them. The tutor should always be transparent and ready to work. Also, a tutor should always keep up…

To work with a happy and motivated student allows to improve and learn in a better way. That's why a good feeling with the child is very important. Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. It's necessary to be a good mentor and help students just not academically but advice them on any…

I think a tutor has to be such kind of person who can unwillingly be able to establish himself/ herself as a role model to follow which will guarantee the success of the the student in the future. My personal opinion on me is I can understand the problem being faced by the students despite their denial about the problem and eventually bring them…

I believe ultimately, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where when asked "Do you understand?", the student feels free to say "Nope". This honesty is priceless and very helpful in identifying knowledge-gaps early. I pride myself on being patient. I was a slow learner, and often had questions which were ignored or…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to motivate their students. As they are still young, they may not understand the importance of what they are doing at school. Which is why as tutor we have to motivate them such that they are able to look at their school work in a different perspective such that it is interesting and exciting to them. My…

Inside Russell LeaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sophie worked on surface area and area of composite shapes, along with strategies for breaking down complex geometry problems.

For Year 10, Lachlan revised algebraic operations including expanding brackets and solving equations using targeted practice from his chosen workbook.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ava focused on calculus applications by practising optimisation (max/min) problems and reviewing differentiation techniques through real exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly left revision for major exams until the last minute and missed key Term 1 content, leading to ongoing gaps in algebra that now undermine confidence before finals.

As one tutor observed, "he has not done any work on this revision on his own."

In Standard Maths (senior), another student failed to mention a major assignment part, completing it solo instead of seeking help—missing valuable feedback and support.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student consistently crammed working onto one page without clear layout, making error tracking nearly impossible during complex algebra. These habits created confusion and wasted time during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Russell Lea noticed some encouraging shifts lately. In Year 11, William used to rely on memorising formulas but has started asking more "why" questions and now works through problems using logical steps instead of just rules.

During a recent Year 12 session, Kyle took initiative by focusing revision on his weaker areas for an upcoming exam; he's also begun double-checking his work independently—something he avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once hesitated to speak up is now regularly explaining how she solves math problems out loud and even volunteered to tackle the hardest question first this week.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything is going well with Dexter. Jordana gets on really well with her, and finds Dexter explains things very clearly, and has been a great help already with her understanding of Maths.

Jakob and Cara have a great working relationship and cover alot of content in each session. Cara's confidence and maths skills have grown considerably since commencing tutoring.

Amity is enjoying her tutouring. She is very pleased as she recently received an academic award at school meaning she had received A for all subjects for last term. So we are very happy with Xiaoya.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Russell Lea Public School.
