A tutor can help build a child's confidence in their own abilities. They can inspire them to learn and can crucially create an environment of nurture and care. Most importantly, a tutor can encourage a love for learning that helps create the foundations of a successful student. By equipping students with the tools required to improve their…

Some of the most important things I think a tutor can do for a student include being patient, being a good listener and collaborator, being confident and enthusiastic and having flexibility and good communication skills. I think some of my strengths as a tutor would include having the ability to solve conflicts, and having emotional intelligence.…

I believe it's important for tutors to ensure that their students see them as a not only in a 'teacher' role, but someone they could look to advice if they ever feel the need - like a role model, or a mentor. Tutors should help their students gain confidence in their ability to achieve their goals, and by establishing small, achievable milestones…

The most significant things a tutor need to consider is the quality of the lesson, not the quantity. I need to ensure that my students are fully understand what I teach them and they should be confident in asking if they have problems to understand. As a tutor, I am an extremely enthusiastic and patient person. I can organise the class and deliver…

One important thing a tutor can do is make the experience personable and cater to the students individual needs. This will make sure that the student is learning in there preferred way and able to understand different ideas in the most effective way for them self. It’s also important that the tutor is able to build a Rapport with the student and…

I find it important for tutors to be able to make a student comfortable to ask them questions and to give wrong answers. The most important way we learn is through seeing our failures and determining what we can do better the next time. Without being able to acknowledge their own mistakes and see how they can do better, students will not be able…

The most important thing a tutor can provide to a student is their time. It goes without saying that all children are different and learn through alternative ways/modes. Patience, perseverance and continual tailored support from a tutor is crucial in allowing a student to understand certain concepts. By having a tutor that is continually readily…

Be outgoing. The worst thing is for a student to be scared to ask for help because they feel embarrassed. The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to instil confidence. They can do this by promoting critical thinking and providing constructive feedback. Given my experience with tutoring, I believe my…

I consider patience and dedication to be the most valuable qualities a tutor can provide. The student needs to feel supported in a learning environment to succeed, especially if it is a subject they aren't particularly strong at. As a former HSC student, I honestly felt the 'tough love' approach some tutors had would deter me from wanting to study…

I believe that the tutor shouldn't be the one always in control and leading the session. Especially in early sessions, I believe the tutor should encourage the student to ask many questions of them, to grasp what they know and how they interpret different topics. Tutoring almost becomes useless if the tutor is the one constantly talking because…

Some of the concepts can be challenging for a student. It is important for the tutor to explain it in a simple way and make the student understand and also making learning fun at the same time. Local Reviews

Inside Russell LeaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Sophie worked on surface area and area of composite shapes, along with strategies for breaking down complex geometry problems.

For Year 10, Lachlan revised algebraic operations including expanding brackets and solving equations using targeted practice from his chosen workbook.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Ava focused on calculus applications by practising optimisation (max/min) problems and reviewing differentiation techniques through real exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly left revision for major exams until the last minute and missed key Term 1 content, leading to ongoing gaps in algebra that now undermine confidence before finals.

As one tutor observed, "he has not done any work on this revision on his own."

In Standard Maths (senior), another student failed to mention a major assignment part, completing it solo instead of seeking help—missing valuable feedback and support.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student consistently crammed working onto one page without clear layout, making error tracking nearly impossible during complex algebra. These habits created confusion and wasted time during sessions.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Russell Lea noticed some encouraging shifts lately. In Year 11, William used to rely on memorising formulas but has started asking more "why" questions and now works through problems using logical steps instead of just rules.

During a recent Year 12 session, Kyle took initiative by focusing revision on his weaker areas for an upcoming exam; he's also begun double-checking his work independently—something he avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student who once hesitated to speak up is now regularly explaining how she solves math problems out loud and even volunteered to tackle the hardest question first this week.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Everything is going well with Dexter. Jordana gets on really well with her, and finds Dexter explains things very clearly, and has been a great help already with her understanding of Maths.

Jakob and Cara have a great working relationship and cover alot of content in each session. Cara's confidence and maths skills have grown considerably since commencing tutoring.

Amity is enjoying her tutouring. She is very pleased as she recently received an academic award at school meaning she had received A for all subjects for last term. So we are very happy with Xiaoya.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Five Dock Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Russell Lea Public School.
