The most important things that a tutor can do for a student is to: 1) Build strong, personal relationships with their students: a tutor should personalize the learning, make learning more interesting for the student, and teach to the student's strengths while minimizing their weaknesses. 2) Focus on goal setting, and creating benchmarks. A tutor needs to help identify a student's strong points and motivate the students in every possible way. It's not always the tutor that should be valued and respected but the students also needs the same respect and care. Also, a tutor should know how to boost up the morale of a student when he/she is feeling low. If student is facing some…

A tutor has to be patient and welcoming for their students. The reason these students come for tutoring is because they face difficulty keeping up with school. So they should be given the space to understand at their own pace, in their own method and a teacher needs to recognize that. We need to recognize the method which we choose to teach a…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can offer a child is patience. Impatience does not create a suitable learning environment. Qualities like these can prevent a child from wanting to learn, they may negatively associate with the subject, putting them further behind. Every child can succeed, given enough time. I have strengths as coach that…

In my opinion, as a tutor, it is very important to cherish the students as they progressed, acknowledging their work and encourage them to try to do with their full potential. Besides, it is important to have an understanding of their best way of learning, and encourage them to question in their learning. Furthermore, awareness of their wellbeing…

According to me the most important trait in a tutor is patience. It is not necessary that each child learns at the same pace. A tutor should also possess the ability to create and provide problem statements which help the student to get a grip over the topic. Along with a good speaker a tutor must be a good listener making the session more…

A tutor should be able to communicate clearly with a student. It is important for a tutor to be patient with a student as different students learn at different paces. Inside Salisbury SouthTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Harry focused on adding and subtracting decimal numbers and completed a timed word problem test involving decimals.

Year 8 student Ava worked through collecting like terms in algebra, then moved to multiplying negative integers using practice questions from her homework.

For Year 10, Maya explored figurative language by analysing metaphors and similes within a Harlem Renaissance poem, with follow-up essay writing for deeper understanding.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student's essay was well structured but noticeably short—homework time wasn't fully utilised, which limited depth.

In Year 9 algebra, as a tutor observed, "he skipped showing steps in working out," making it hard to spot calculation errors.

One Year 8 student repeatedly forgot to complete homework for several weeks, causing visible gaps when new concepts were introduced.

A Year 4 learner left several questions unfinished due to distraction and missed instructions; "gets off track easily" appeared more than once in the notes.

During online lessons, a senior student found distractions crept in, reducing focus during key practice on like terms.

Recent Achievements

One Salisbury South tutor saw a big shift in a Year 9 student's approach to maths: after struggling with negative integers, he now works through adding and subtracting them almost error-free and immediately picked up multiplying negatives—last session, he got just two homework questions wrong.

In English, a high schooler who previously missed figurative language cues is now independently spotting metaphors, similes, and even new examples like hyperbole and alliteration.

For a younger student, the tutor noted she now reads aloud without prompting and self-corrects when she notices mistakes—something she hesitated to do before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Salisbury Community Hub Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Keller Road Primary School.
