I think the most important thing is to be encouraging and make sure they know how much you believe in them. I think that once you believe you can you are basically halfway there I'm kind and incredibly patient! I was also a very visual learner so didn't quite get the approach most teachers took at school. Particularly year 11 and 12 I had to find…

The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student would be, firstly helping the student develop understandings of the subject at a fundamental level and then building up to a mastery from there. Secondly, being an assistant to help in any task they may deem to difficult to tackle alone, but not doing it for them, instead helping them…

I believe one of the most important things a maths tutor can do is bring a genuine enjoyment for the subject. When students enjoy what they’re learning, they become more engaged and make faster, more meaningful progress. Beyond that, I think it’s also important for a tutor to build students’ confidence, explain concepts clearly, and provide…

Reiterating what I have already mentioned, the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student is teach them HOW to learn and HOW to tackle future difficult areas of study. Of course I will work through any problem that they struggle with and provide the correct answer/solution/etc. but I hope to teach them that when they come across a…

I love math and think a lot of people's hatred towards it is because they haven't been taught in a way they understand. A tutor's role is to help kids learn math in a way that works for them, different to how they are being taught in school. My biggest strength is my ability to work with children and create a safe place to make mistakes and…

- Ultimately a maths tutor is engaged to help the student either understand the material better or they have a certain outcome in mind when it comes to results - For most students, high school maths is all about practice and repetition, and seeing enough different examples and worked solutions so that they can handle the test material - The…

To build their confidence in the subject, If they feel they are not able to complete a section and lose motivation they should be shown that they absolutely can, and to not give up. This is a big issue in exams and tests where capable students feel demoralized after struggling with a single question and lose their motivation and confidence for…

A tutor can help boost a student's confidence because they provide individual attention that is not always available in a classroom situation. The most important things a maths tutor can do for a student is create a judgement free zone. I believe it's important a maths tutor offers patience and understanding to the student if they are struggling to understand something. As it doesn't help the student if they feel you're getting frustrated at them. I'm good at explaining how to do an example in various ways to ensure that the student can understand. Some of these can be unique to…

The most important thing a maths tutor does for a student is helping them become more confident, so that they have faith in their own abilities and performance. Local Reviews

Easy to organise and great tutor!
Julie, Sandringham

Inside SandringhamTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Ben practised solving integer equations and converting fractions to decimals, using worked examples for clarity.

Year 10, Maya reviewed the application of differentiation principles to kinematics, focusing on velocity versus speed and using the chain rule.

For Year 11, Tom worked through linear equations with CAS technology and started reviewing simple and compound interest calculations in preparation for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

Across several year levels, incomplete homework and organization have limited progress: one Year 8 student "didn't remember much in terms of LCM and HCF from last week," with homework left unfinished.

In Years 9–10, written work was sometimes messy or unclear—setting out in algebra and fraction tasks was flagged as needing improvement.

A Year 11 student used the CAS calculator for even simple sums rather than practicing manual computation, making it harder to spot errors or build confidence.

During a recent test, a senior student's stress led to forgotten methods and difficulty recalling processes under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sandringham noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who, after struggling to write out her working, now uses a step-by-step "talk aloud" strategy and completes practice tests much more neatly.

In Year 12 maths, another student recently scored 81% on a tech-free SAC and is getting better at checking the wording of each question to avoid losing marks for careless mistakes—something that had tripped him up before.

Meanwhile, a primary student who found analogue time confusing can now confidently read times past the hour without needing reminders.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Sandringham Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Firbank Grammar School - Sandringham Campus.
