One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is give them a personalised teaching experience. Often there are other factors at play in the progress of a student's learning than just their mental ability. Being able to recognise and connect to the child will open up numerous learning pathways to allow them to reach their full…

A tutor needs to provide their student with support, tools, skills and most importantly understanding of how they can effectively approach their studies and achieve the best possible results they can. A tutor should also make their student feel comfortable, creating a sense of trust between them and allowing for more effective tutoring sessions.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be a source of inspiration and support. I believe all students are equally capable and that with a little bit of tutor motivation and support, they can grow. I would consider my biggest strength to be my patience. I understand that some kids may not be as quick as others and I don't mind…

Tutors should be willing to listen and work well with students to achieve their personal goals. Tutors must foster or inspire a strong work ethic within students, motivating them to strive to reach their personal best. Aside from increasing a student's comprehension of particular subjects, tutors should highlight the importance of speaking up and…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is help them find a passion for learning and guide them in their studies so that the student can find a subject or a topic that they are passionate about and love. I think that the most important thing for a student is not only the grade that they achieve but also the…

Local Reviews

Annalise feels that she has benefited enormously from her first two sessions with her tutor, Muqeet. We both find him to be a thoughtful, empathetic and very encouraging young man. Annalise reported feeling more confident to answer questions in class and even helping her classmate get a correct answer after only her first session with Muqeet.

Inside Scotland IslandTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Lucy worked through rates, ratios, and introductory trigonometry using real-life word problems.

In Year 11, Daniel focused on financial mathematics topics including simple and compound interest as well as depreciation calculations with sample HSC questions.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Emily practiced advanced exam techniques by tackling past papers covering the normal distribution and annuities alongside targeted revision of continuous probability distributions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student faced issues with exam-style questions when relying on notes instead of practicing unaided; "practice under timed conditions" revealed persistent errors that were only noticed after time ran out.

In Year 11, messy working and skipping over hints in complex algebra led to lost marks—one tutor observed, "he missed details hidden in the question stimulus."

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student tackling normal distributions avoided harder variants, focusing revision on familiar types rather than diverse exam problems. This meant confidence dropped sharply when unexpected formats appeared during practice assessments.

Recent Achievements

One Scotland Island tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after struggling with algebra earlier in the term, was able to solve complex equations independently without prompting.

Another win came from a Year 10 session where the student arrived already prepared with specific questions—something they'd hesitated to do before—which meant the lesson focused directly on what they found most challenging.

At primary level, a younger student quickly remembered and applied content from last week's session, working through new problems independently for the first time.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for your email. Ben and David are working well together and it appears that the working relationship is positive. Interestingly, Ben has instantly been able to move to working with David as both David and Ben have in common the same secondary school that Ben is currently going to. So while David attended the school some years prior to Ben, and much has change, they were still able to compare experiences about the school which helped start them working constructively. We are very satisfied with continuing with David.

Yes so far we are happy with Emma. The reason we want the tutoring is that I would like Stephanie to be extended in a similar way to that which coaching colleges follow ie they seem to follow the curriculum of selective schools. I would like Stephanie to have the same opportunity to be extended. Since the coaching colleges are inconvenient for us, we much prefer to have a tutor like Emma.

Tanay enjoys learning with Curtis which is a great thing so I am sure he will listen to what Curtis has to tell him.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Avalon Community Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Luke's Grammar School, Bayview Campus.
