I think an essential thing an english tutor can do for their student is be empathetic! Often, for teachers, its hard to understand what students are feeling, since school and lifestyle has changed from the time they were students to now (in a global pandemic). Therefore, being an tutor who displays empathy about understanding what its like being a…

Inside Seaview DownsTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Thomas worked on mastering the rules for algebraic equations—ensuring what is done to one side is mirrored on the other—and revised how to add and multiply fractions, focusing on foundational skills needed for future topics.

Year 10 student clarified the requirements of a calculus assignment by reviewing the quadratic formula for solving equations and then practiced basic surd and logarithm rules in preparation for an upcoming test.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 session involved practicing exponent laws, including multiplying and dividing exponents with the same base and simplifying more complex expressions using these rules.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, skipping steps in working meant small sign errors went unnoticed—"he skipped showing steps in algebra, which hid sign errors," as a tutor observed.

In Year 12 calculus and physics, Thomas often struggled to recall the correct formula under pressure, leading to hesitation during multi-step problems; messy notes and unclear cheat sheets slowed revision before tests.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student lost focus during subtraction tasks when distracted by nearby activity, leaving answers incomplete.

In several senior sessions, forgetting notebooks or not reviewing feedback made it harder to spot recurring mistakes on practice exams.

Recent Achievements

A Seaview Downs tutor noticed a big shift in one Year 11 student who, after struggling with calculus rules, started using sign diagrams independently to solve minimum and maximum problems—something he'd previously avoided without step-by-step help.

In Year 9, Stephen recently began checking his answers for mistakes instead of rushing through practice tests, showing more care and accuracy than before.

Meanwhile, Jye (Year 4) surprised his tutor by reading aloud a narrative text smoothly and using word attack skills to decode new words—where just weeks ago he hesitated when facing tricky vocabulary.

Jack is definitely gaining more confidence and Winyue is a very calming and her gentleness with him is a perfect match!

We are very happy with the service, the professionalism of Malmi and the feedback and report. I have recommended you as a tutoring service to families that I see as clients.
