I will instill pride and confidence in students that they can be successful. Cultivating a growth mindset is important, a belief that small steps progress into achieved milestones. Importantly, I will instill in students the courage to try again and that there's no such thing as failure if we persevere. I can support students in their current…

A tutor should be patient and never say something is easy. They should always encourage and find ways to explain something step-by-step such that everything is explained and can be linked back to a central idea. I am patient, friendly, and I can see and understand why something can be difficult to understand. I encourage and can relate to finding…

I consider the tutors passion and enthusiasm towards a subject can have a positive impact on how the student receives the information. When a tutor is enthusiastic on the content they are teaching, this transfers to the student. I am patient and try to break down complex content ideas into manageable ideas. From experience, I have learnt this is…

I believe it is most important for a tutor to tailor their teaching according to the needs of their student. Many students learn in different ways such as visual or through different compounding activities to build a strong foundation before moving on to more difficult concepts. I believe being able to teach a student in the way that is most…

Make sure that you're not doing the work for them, only assisting them in their learning- For it will be them sitting the exam come the end of the year. By teaching them not only the subject matter but also the skills to mold themselves to every problem or question, you'll be instilling confidence in them that no matter what is introduced to them…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to teach themselves. Instead of spoon-feeding students the answers to specific questions, a good tutor helps students understand how to think to devise a solution for any problem they encounter. Being only 18 years old and currently in Year 12, I thoroughly…

A tutor should be someone very good at analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a student and helping them accordingly. A tutor should be able to lay out proper guidelines for the student in order for them to be able to reach their target and goals. I feel the strength that I have as a tutor is that I am very good at analyzing the understanding…

I strongly believe in the idea behind the saying, teach a person how to fish, and you feed them for a lifetime. A tutor's role extends beyond just providing answers; it's about equipping students with problem-solving skills that they can apply across different subjects and real-world situations. My engineering degree has taught me how to break…

One of the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to keep them motivated. However, this can be challenging especially when they have many knowledge gaps and feel fallen behind at school. A good tutor is able to identify and fill in those gaps, helping students realise their full potentials and gain confidence. It is also important…

I believe a tutor needs to be patient and adapting. They need to understand that everyone has different learning speeds and learning levels, hence their teaching styles should vary depending on each student, and they must be patient when helping. Being a medical student, I value how education builds an individual. Having the right mentors and teachers during one's educational journey can either make or break them. A role of tutor is to clear the concepts of student individually that they have studied during class. A tutor is there to guide students by making them realise their mistakes and later by explaining and solving the topics. And for that tutor should know his students first. As a tutor I think knowing and understanding the working method of each…

Moreover, students should feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and exploring ideas without judgment. I consider time, listening, and encouragement as the important things a tutor can do for every student. I believe that the starting point is to look into where the student is coming from to better assess what the problem is. Then, a tutor should acknowledge that everyone learns at a different pace and with a distinct learning style. Some…

Inside Sefton ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student James worked through the rules of index laws, focusing on expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions with brackets and exponents.

A Year 9 student explored coordinate geometry by calculating gradients, midpoints, and lengths of line segments, while also practicing multiplication and division using index laws in algebra.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student tackled Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometry problems relevant to their classwork, applying these concepts to solve real-world worded questions.

Recent Challenges

Several process obstacles were noted across different year levels.

In Year 5, Molly repeatedly did not complete her assigned maths homework and was unable to show progress on a project between sessions, which meant she missed chances to reinforce skills like multiplication and data analysis. As one tutor observed, "Molly did not do any work after we finished the previous lesson and did not even appear to have added anything to the document."

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student struggled with organizing working for algebraic problems; his cluttered layout made it difficult to find sign errors when reviewing solutions.

During revision for calculus in Year 12, anxiety about timing led him to skip checking steps—this resulted in repeated mistakes during induction proofs and left him frustrated by small but costly errors.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sefton Park noticed a big shift with a Year 10 student who used to struggle with algebra—he now completes assigned tasks efficiently and even rearranges equations without help, something he couldn't do before.

Another win came from a senior student who picked up calculus rapidly; she differentiated surds and worked through logarithms with minimal prompting, showing initiative by asking for tougher problems mid-session.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant about multiplication last term now remembers her times tables and volunteers answers during lessons, finishing all ten practice questions correctly this week.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prospect Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College.
