As a tutor, I believe the most important things a teacher could do for their students is making them feel encouraged and secured. Promoting education in today's society is something that should be dominated and put first. In my eyes, a child's education is the first step towards a child's success. Encouraging students and providing them with a…

It is important to help the student build their confidence in their learnings especially as an independent individual, so that they can face other struggles they encounter over and beyond the classroom and private tuition they receive. I am able to identify the weakness in the students to assist and help them overcome their difficulties in…

Identifying a student's weaknesses and strengths not only in a subject but in their general approach to life is very important. Honing strengths and working on weaknesses will allow tutors to tap into a student's potential. Deeply considering how and why a student is performing the way they are is also very important and allows changes to be made.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not only assist in their studies, but also to be able to work independently but know when to ask for help through the students ability to detect errors and my assistance when possible. I believe it is not the grade that matters, but the effort, dedication, commitment and time the student…

Overall I believe that for a child to succeed they must be put at the centre of their learning. This will ensure that they get the best out of their education, and that all learning that takes place is for the best interests of the child. My strengths as a tutor is building strong reciprocal relationships. To me this is crucial for a child who is…

Communication is the biggest aspect of tutoring. Without it, individuals will not be able to successfully grasp content and may not perform as well. During my own time tutoring, I would utilise a reiteration/imitation method where I would ask the tutee to explain what I had taught back to me to see if my point came across. The most important part…

I believe the most important thing a tutor does for a student is allow the student to develop a solid grasp of the content matter and hence achieve the best results. My strengths as a tutor is taking the time to ensure a student has a solid grasp on a concept before moving on to more content. My biology and chemistry teacher did this so I have…

It is to emphatize and to have patience with the student. Not everyone has the same learning curve. Other people learn faster than the others. It is common to get frustrated when your student is not understanding what you are trying to teach him/her, however, do not let your students feel and see that. It may not only hurt their self-confidence…

Ensuring our duty of care over our students and making sure that they gained something from each lesson. I feel a successful tutor is someone who can see what a student is capable of, given the right kind of training. Someone who can encourage and appreciate them for even a small improvement they show and have them see their mistakes as an opportunity to learn and grow. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to persevere in times of academic adversity. The first thing is showing them achieving anything is possible no mater how hard the task. Even if at first it seems impossible, by not giving up on them it can teach the student to always try and have faith in their abilities. The second thing is setting them up for success. A tutor's role goes beyond simply teaching subject matter. In addition to imparting knowledge, tutors help build a student's confidence in the subject, enhance their analytical and creative thinking, improve problem-solving abilities, and even contribute to the development of the student's personality in ways that are within the tutor's scope.…

In my opinion the most important thing a tutor can do is make sure that the student truly understand the various concepts taught. That is because my belief is that by understanding the concept rather than memorising, you are less likely to forget how to do the question in the exam and/or get a mind blank As a tutor, I think my strengths would be…

Inside ShalveyTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Riley worked on solving inequalities and explored gradients in linear equations, practicing graphing techniques.

For Year 9, Sarah tackled simultaneous equations using both substitution and elimination methods, then moved on to a chapter review focusing on BODMAS and fraction operations.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ethan concentrated on calculus skills—specifically differentiation—and also reviewed function properties by working through targeted exam-style questions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student struggled to focus during exams, leading to "a lot of careless mistakes"—missing marks in questions he otherwise understood.

In Year 7, one student overcomplicated simple fraction problems and sometimes forgot basic steps after missing class from an injury; this made catching up slower.

For a Year 8 learner, confusion with shape reflections grew each time the mirror line moved, leaving him frustrated mid-task.

Across multiple high school years, incomplete tutor homework was noted: "Requesting more consistency in completing tutor homework," which meant missed chances for targeted feedback before tests.

Recent Achievements

One Shalvey tutor noticed a Year 11 student stopped relying on graphing software for linear equations and now completes classwork on time—a big shift from earlier habits of hesitancy.

Another high schooler, previously making small errors with negative numbers, has recently shown real progress mastering mean, median, and mode; he even solved a harder median problem without needing hints.

In a primary session, Musawer—who often guessed angles before—now confidently adds them up independently and explains his steps out loud during practice.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Very happy with Jason's tutelage.  Anna understands him and they work well together. Thanks for the connection!

Holly enjoyed her lessons with Jennifer as she was VERY patient and simplified the tasks, so that Holly could gain a better concept of the task at hand.

Thomas got 83% in each of his 2 Maths exams in the last week, (he went from 97 % to 50 % which made us think of tutoring) but for me its not the mark , it's the fact that he is happy and confident and really looking forward to his tutor time. It has done such a lot for his confidence Big thanks to Gabrielle!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Mt Druitt Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Chifley College Shalvey Campus.
