To develop critical thinking and a problem solving attitude in a student so that they can themselves breakdown a complex question into easier, doable sections to reach to the solution. This will help the student to clarify their concepts without the tutor directly providing them with the solution but instead leading them through a simplified…

Make the student love the subject. There are many ways varying from a student to the other. If a student falls in love with the subject, he will comprehend it, not just learn it. I started tutoring when i was in undergraduate to my own class fellows and that was in 2002. With such a vast experience i have amazing teaching skills built-in…

I believe tutors exist to help extend the foundations of what students are taught in schools, whether it be through analysing old concepts with a finer view or reinforcing newer concepts with carefully selected examples and analogies. I believe I am quite capable of exercising patience when a student is trying to understand the subject, trying to…

A tutor can teach according to the need of a student which is not possible in a class. Even a child can tell his or her weakness frankly which they can't express in the class I start from the basic. I teach according to the need of a child. I can teach the same concept number of times until the child understands. I can teach all the types of…

I think the most important things a tutor can do is to provide academic guidance, human connection, and motivation and drive interest of the student towards the subject. The combination of these factors can potentially reinvent a class, subject, or school more broadly for a young learner. Creativity and enthusiasm for teaching. Ability to explain…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving them confidence that they can learn. This will give them confidence to try and be creative in finding ways to understand any complex topic they need to know. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspiring them into studying. This is done by helping them understand the knowledge and get used to solving problems that they feel confident rather than daunting towards the subject. My strength as a tutor is tailoring my students' speed and ability. I usually ask about their…

I think it is very important as a tutor to start a topic from its basic and build a strong idea of the subject material so that the student enjoys studying. I have rarely ever used the same method of explaining a concept/theory on multiple students. It is really important for tutors to understand the needs and abilities of their students in order to maintain progress. It is also crucial for tutors to have time-management and resourceful qualities in order to ensure academic development in students.…

In my opinion, the best thing a tutor can do for a student is to acknowledge the students intelligence. Einstein said it best himself "Everyone is a genius. Being a role model and a guide for the students is the best thing a tutor can do. An exceptional tutor would ensure their students have an in-depth understanding of concepts by altering their teaching methods to best complement the student's learning capacity and to the material being taught. Not only can tutors help build up a students' confidence in areas they are particularly weak in, but they can also give insight into what is to come in further years of school and how to prepare for such content. I believe I am good at breaking down harder concepts into individual relatable, easy to understand components to teach separately, then…

Inside SilverwaterTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student worked on multiplication and division skills, including strategies for long division using step-by-step written methods.

Year 8 student, Jessica, focused on algebra—specifically expanding and simplifying expressions as well as a brief introduction to factorisation.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student revised laws of indices and exponents by identifying patterns in number theory questions from the curriculum.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student often skipped writing steps in algebra, especially with negatives and surds—"he preferred to do it in his head," one tutor observed—leading to sign errors that took extra time to correct.

In Year 12, unfinished homework meant valuable lesson time was spent catching up on questions instead of tackling new calculus topics; late submissions were sometimes due to outside commitments like sport or camp.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with remembering trigonometry formulas after switching topics, making it hard to apply concepts during practice tests.

These moments left students feeling behind just as new material was introduced.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Silverwater recently noticed a Year 11 student who, after previously struggling with exam errors, now spots and corrects "silly mistakes" on his own—he fixed about a quarter of his latest paper without prompting.

In another session, a Year 10 student who once left homework unfinished has started submitting it consistently and even asks for clarification when stuck, rather than guessing or staying silent.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to need help with multi-digit addition can now solve sums like 23+28 independently by remembering to carry forward—a step he often missed before.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ermington Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newington Public School.
