Being a good communicator and having a good relationship with the student so they can feel safe and have a place to feel themselves, because students cannot learn if they don't feel like they are comfortable with the people with them. I always ensure I get to know the students, ask them about their hobbies during the session or how they are going…

The most important thing is to make a friendly and positive environment in which students can learn and express their individuality. in this enevrirnmtn there should respect between tutors and students that provides a safe place to learn. The key aspect to tutoring requires communication between a tutor and student. This eventually allows all the important elements like goal setting, creating guidelines and benchmarks to occur. The tutor should be able to create learning timetable with students on their ongoing learning progress and if possible, communicate with the parents to find…

Be available and help them develop transferable skills. In my opinion, there's no point handing them an A+ essay to study and learn phrases, but rather help them understand why each type of connection and phrase is important and adds value, so that they can build their own skills which can be used under pressure in exams and across all of their…

A tutor is someone who is there for the student and always willing to help them succeed. They do this by understanding the student's goals and adjusting their learning style to better suit the student's needs. Broadly speaking, the most important thing to gain from school is preparation for the harsh realities and injustices that come with further education and adult life, but still being able to retain idealistic wonder and be able to still move forward to overcome those obstacles and enjoy life. I believe that communication skills and patience is most crucial. Being able to explain a hard subject to simpler words so a student can understand is one of the most essential thing I figured throughout my tutoring experiences. Tutors should also be ready to answer any questions asked by students. I am capable of elaborating subjects, I adapt and…

I think the one the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be creative and flexible with learning styes. For example, if a student doesn’t understand a particular concept or problem even after the tutor has gone through it and broken it down, the tutor can go through that little extra mile of trying to explain the problem in…

I consider that being able to put effort into tutoring outside of tutoring sessions by collating extra materials and information suited to the student's method of learning is very important. It is also vital to ensure that the tutor works collaboratively with the student as well as the parents. Ensuring the student understands the material they…

I think students attend tutors in the first place for support, for a tutor I think this means support not only academically but also via alleviating their doubts, correcting study techniques, building confidence and offering the general support that they need to succeed. I believe this can be achieved by maintaining a constant channel of…

Inside SomertonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Sohaila revisited the split strategy for three-digit by two-digit multiplication, followed by targeted division problems to reinforce prior learning.

Year 10 student Keshan focused on rearranging equations in coordinate geometry, solving for gradient and y-intercept, and practiced expanding and simplifying algebraic expressions using step-by-step examples.

For Year 6, Zoyi worked through an English assessment that included comprehension, spelling, grammar, and paragraph writing skills to address areas of difficulty.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10 English, a student often struggled to connect evidence to broader themes in text responses; as one tutor observed, "she tended to describe events rather than analyse their impact." This limited the depth of her essays.

In Year 7 mathematics, another student needed reminders to complete assigned homework and showed difficulty managing time during multi-step algebra tasks—unfinished questions meant missed feedback opportunities.

Meanwhile, a Year 3 learner's written work was hard to follow due to inconsistent punctuation and paragraphing, making it challenging for her to proofread effectively. By lesson's end, fatigue sometimes led to skipped steps or incomplete practice.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Somerton noticed one Year 10 student, who previously hesitated to seek clarification, now independently identifies her weak spots in English essays and actively asks for targeted feedback—something she never did before.

In Year 7 maths, a student who once guessed at multiplication strategies is now confidently applying the split strategy to tackle both two-digit by two-digit and three-digit by two-digit problems without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner recently began solving worded maths questions on her own after initially struggling to decode what each question was really asking, finishing an entire worksheet with just one prompt.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We could not be happier with Mandar he is very pleasant to deal with, always on time and very good with the Khai, Piper and Chase.

Connor was great and has put Indigo on a great pathway for working independently with her maths.

Kerry helped Ella with her confidence and she did really well with her math test. Her scores have been going up.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Craigieburn Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Roxburgh Park Primary School.
