The most important role for a maths tutor is to get the best out of the students. This can take many forms but ultimately requires the tutor to be flexible in their teaching approach, understand the areas the student is struggling with and provide support in a way that is best received by the student. I'm highly organised which enables me to be…

I think the most important thing to do as a maths tutor is to amend the teaching style for different students. Motivation was one of the things that I and many of my peers struggled with, and so, the last thing I want is for my student to not be engaged in the content. One way to do this to include connections to the student's interests. In…

The requisite ability of a maths tutor is to teach, but the far more difficult and far more important task is to give context on what a student is learning. In other words, to explain why you would want to study, what you can do with a good ATAR and to show them the potential that is so easy to overlook whilst you're in school. It becomes so…

The most important thing a maths tutor can do is listen to the student and try to understand what it is they actually need to learn. Sometimes a tutor is teaching something but they are not actually listening to what the student is asking, which is false. It is also important to personalise how a tutor teaches to how a student learns. Although…

The most important thing is to be patient and understanding with the student, helping them solve and understand their current subject problems. Furthermore it is important to help the student develop skills to be able to tackle future problems on their own. It is most important for a maths tutor to have the student\'s best interest at heart whilst also forming a healthy relationship. Being able to have casual conversations whilst working on content will be beneficial to the student as they will not dread their studies. A tutor should be able to, help the student feel confident in their knowledge, minimise stress for the student and discuss the future of the students education. I have seen many peers underachieve because they are not confident or are too stressed. Maths is usually taught in a manner that shows students how to get an answer, but not necessarily…

In order for students to learn to the best of their ability, a maths tutor needs to create a safe space for them to make mistakes. I believe that the most valuable way to learn is through making mistakes. Additionally, a tutor must demonstrate healthy and effective communication with the student. Both of these aspects foster a respectful and…

Inside SomervilleTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Ava focused on addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions, then worked through dividing fractions and ratios using visual models.

For Year 8, Daniel practised identifying triangles and calculating angles before moving on to review quadrilaterals and their properties.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Sarah tackled surds and indices, then revised exponential functions ahead of her upcoming test to build confidence with these advanced algebraic concepts.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student entered the session unsure how to start factorising questions and hesitated when faced with algebra, often "mixing up what formula to use" if steps weren't clearly mapped out.

In Year 10, exam time management issues surfaced: working slowly through long-form questions meant several were left unfinished.

For a Year 4 learner, division concepts only clicked after repeated prompting; homework was rarely attempted independently, as one tutor observed, "needs more initiative to do work."

In chemistry for Year 11, over-reliance on the data book led to missed method errors—extra practice is still needed outside sessions.

Recent Achievements

A Somerville tutor noticed a Year 10 student who used to avoid asking questions is now regularly seeking clarification on tricky algebra steps, especially with simultaneous equations—a big shift from staying silent last term.

In Year 8, another student made a leap in geometry by correctly identifying angles and types of lines without prompting after weeks of confusion, even applying the number line for negative numbers independently.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 learner who struggled to complete homework now attempts times tables tasks at home unprompted and recently finished six pages of maths work almost entirely error-free.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Thank you for the assistance Thanh has provided. It has certainly improved her confidence.

We have had two tutor sessions with Rhys and thus far we have been very happy with everything and more importantly Stewart is quite comfortable with Rhys and is finding the sessions helpful.

The tutoring is going well. Liana is settling in well and she finds Jacques explains things in a way she can understand.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Somerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Somerville Primary School.
