In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

I think the most important things a tutor can do for a student is getting them motivated to work hard. It is important that the students themselves have a desire to improve. Another majorly important thing is a focus on understanding and confidence in the concepts rather than finding patterns in repetitive practice. Additionally, tutors should…

Provide a guiding hand and be there for them when they need it without directly giving away the answer or solution to a problem. The struggle is where the learning happens and it's important to be there with them and help create a strong yet comfortable learning environment for them to excel in. The most important thing a tutor can do to a student is make student believe that student can learn and reach proper solution. Every one has the potential to learn things so, once a student starts believing in himself/herself studying starts to become fun. I as a tutor hardly give up on my students. I can only be satisfied and feel peaceful once I…

Motivating a student is arguably even more important. Any assistance is meaningless if an individual doesn't have a desire to learn. Helping a student to understand what they want to learn and why is the thing I value above all as a teacher. I feel that I have a firm grasp on mathematics that would be useful to share with others. I have a desire…

1. A tutor can shape how a student thinks about a particular topic/subject. If while teaching something the tutor himself/herself is not interested then the student will be less likely to pay 100% attention 2. A tutor can empower the student to learn better and at their own pace. Just letting the student know that it is okay if you take more time…

Our modern world is built around education and every student can expect to experience a lot of it in the future. Therefore, it is most important that a tutor should model genuine interest in learning (both the subject matter and how to learn well), so that the student him/herself enjoys the process and is encouraged to become a lifelong learner.…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is reassure them that it is perfectly normal to not understand a topic straight away. Tutors must make sure that students are not ashamed of needing help, and do not feel 'stupid' or 'dumb' for not understanding. I am a very patient person who is good at listening. When I am in a tutoring role…

I believe that tutors must have a good attitude and genuinely enjoy the concepts and the subject. Without this, the student will most likely find the tutoring bland and boring, which would reduce their engagement and their overall performance and knowledge in the subject. I believe there are several things a tutor can deliver to her students, the primary of which is to instill a sense of confidence and can-do attitude among them. This means my role will not only limit to a tutor but also a mentor, guiding my students on multiple aspects of their academic path. As a seasoned tutor and teacher of English, I'd say my…

Inside South BrightonTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 3 student Lucas worked on mastering multiplication techniques and times-tables using interactive memory games, as well as applying the column method for addition and subtraction with both single- and multi-digit numbers.

In Year 7, Emily focused on algebraic basics—such as balancing equations—and revised fraction operations including how to add and multiply fractions for stronger foundations in more advanced topics.

Meanwhile, Year 8 student Alex practiced solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula and explored real-world maths by calculating simple interest after rearranging equations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 mathematics, one student hesitated to attempt complex algebraic problems independently, instead turning quickly to calculators and example solutions—he wanted to use calculators or a multiplication table for the 'hard' questions, noted a tutor. This reliance on aids slowed the development of core problem-solving skills.

In Year 11, stress and self-doubt became visible during test preparation; despite reviewing fraction operations, revision focused mostly on worked examples rather than independent practice.

Meanwhile, a primary-aged student resisted engaging with multiplication work, repeatedly redirecting conversations when bored. As frustration built, confidence waned and tasks were left incomplete.

Recent Achievements

In South Brighton, Brooke has begun to solve multiplication by hand rather than depending on her calculator. Last session she completed all algebraic equations without prompts and showed accurate reasoning using BEDMAS.

In Year 7, Prajna demonstrated a new level of independence by rereading comprehension texts before answering questions, moving away from her previous habit of rushing.

Jye (Year 5) now actively self-corrects his reading errors during oral tasks and recently measured several lengths accurately with a tape measure in practical maths activities.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Brighton Public Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Brighton Primary School.
