I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student build self-confidence. From my own experience, I know that grasping a concept feels much harder when it seems 'impossible.' Confidence changes that perspective, making challenges feel doable and providing the energy needed to tackle difficult problems. I foster this through…

An unspoken role of a tutor is to not only teach their students well but also act as a good role model for them. My goal as a tutor is exactly that. In addition to helping my students greatly improve their grades and passion for their subject, I strive to also emphasise the value of having a growth mindset and the importance of lifelong learning…

A tutor’s most important role is to empower the student to become an independent learner. This involves not only clarifying difficult concepts but also teaching effective study strategies, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving techniques. A tutor should create a supportive and nonjudgmental environment where students feel comfortable…

Since the tutor acts as a role model for the student, the most important thing a tutor can do is to take this opportunity to act as a mentor. By taking this role on board, the dynamic increases and the tutor can effectively teach. My greatest strength is patience and empathy. I have noticed the smartest tutors are not the best tutors. Poor tutors…

I think one of the most important things a tutor could do for their student is to never push them to work too hard or too fast. I also think it is extremely important for the tutor to be open-minded towards the student and take into account their preferences when working or learning. I think something else a tutor should always do for their…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to simplify difficult concepts, to allow them to make mistakes, and to teach them to do a task independently. Once a tutor identifies what a student struggles with, the tutor must help the student make sense of the concept. Aside from this, the tutor must make the student feel safe when it…

Help them grasp the fundamentals of maths, not just the methods of reaching an answer. Then with this it should allow them to solve and understand other questions through derivation from the concepts they do understand. I believe my best strength is that I can understand where someone is coming from when they don't understand a particular branch…

A tutor needs to be able to correctly relay information to the student and teach in an understandable way. It is crucial that you teach your student in the way they learn and do whatever needs to be done to help them. As well as this, you need to be able to set goals to work towards with your student so that the time spent with them is worthwhile.…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to build confidence, to cultivate different understanding methods and not to stick to one method. Also empowering students to tackle challenges on their own so that they can ace their examinations very easily. I believe one of my strength is clear communication i. e will take every lesson…

A tutor can notice the student's strength and nourish it through a structured set of activities that the student can do in class as well as independently. A tutor can also notice the areas of student's weaknesses and supply the student with a learning program that can tackle these weaknesses gradually and methodically. Additionally, a tutor is a…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is be able to understand their needs and feelings towards their studies. The same approach does not work for all students, so it is important to adapt to to each individuals needs in order to give them the best teaching possible, and inspire confidence in themselves. I think my best…

1. Teaching engagingly and interestingly: the student should not feel like it is just another class at school, but provide an opportunity for him/her to engage and deliver content in a manner which piques his/her interest. 2. Providing clear explanations: complex content should be broken down and taught according to the student's knowledge level…

Having had many tutors at university, I've come to realise that a good tutor doesn't simply regurgitate answers from a list of questions. Rather I believe that a tutor has the responsibility of reinforcing what has been taught in class, summarising content and practising with the students. Some important things a tutor can do in addition is…

Zane is finally grasping concepts that he always found confusing in class. Alan has been very patient with Zane, as there is quite a bit of work to do. Zane would not have received this personal time in class, due to time, disruptions etc.. Thank goodness we are starting now before NAPLAN in 2 weeks and highschool in 2019.

Inside South CoogeeTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Isla worked on fractions and telling time using Mathletics activities, with extra practice on word problems.

Year 10 student Dharsshen tackled a challenging essay question focused on structuring arguments and refining thesis statements, as well as reviewing his completed essay for clarity and coherence.

Meanwhile, Year 12 student Amira prepared for her HSC English exam by revising thesis development and practicing short-answer responses worth 20 marks to strengthen analytical skills.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 English student, under pressure from school commitments, began "rushing his work," which led to persistent errors in grammar and punctuation.

In creative writing for Year 8, a reluctance to add detail meant stories lacked vivid description—one tutor observed missing commas where new sentences should have started, making the writing harder to follow.

A Year 5 student struggled with homework page formatting; unclear layouts made it difficult to identify main points or corrections.

In poetry revision for Year 10, another avoided reviewing unfamiliar texts, risking gaps in exam readiness by focusing only on preferred material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Coogee noticed that a Year 10 student, Dharsshen, who used to struggle with structuring essays, now independently spots argument flaws and recently incorporated teacher feedback for the first time.

In Year 11 English, Mohit moved from vague thesis statements to writing a much stronger argument and even achieved a notable 16/20 on an essay—he previously lost more marks due to unclear structure.

Meanwhile, Miyah (Year 4) shifted from guessing answers in maths to using pen-and-paper strategies and talking through her process out loud until she found the right solution herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lionel Bowen Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like South Coogee Public School.
