Listen to the student and do not rush them. Sometimes taking time on a simpler problem instead of skipping straight to the hard stuff is far more beneficial. I have great communication skills and feel I have a strong ability to explain complex problems in a simple and understandable…

I believe one of the things a tutor should find important is to help find coping mechanisms the students can use to ease their exam anxiety. As well as that I believe a tutor should work at the pace that best suits the student rather than the tutor. I believe that I am an outgoing, confident and kind person who can get along with all types of…

Encouragement. When I was a calculus tutor, I noticed how discouraged students could get. It is my job to help them understand as well as be a kind voice telling them that they can do it. I truly believe you can do anything you put your mind to and I try to instill that in my students. I am a very goal oriented tutor. I ask my students what it is…

I believ that a tutor should form a strong connection so students can enjoy the process of learning and studying. Ultimately, this fosters a healthy relationship with education and prepares them for lifelong self-learning and motivation. I have strong organisational skills which assist me in lesson planning. Additionally, I am easily adapable to a…

It is to provide a healthy learning environment. There should be a good rapport between the student and the teacher. The teacher should make the student feel that they are valued and appreciated. It is the primary goal of the tutor to make the student feel that they are well guided and that they are learning the lessons. I am flexible. In dealing…

Motivate them to study. A lot of the times the students are more than capable to achieve good grades but they just struggle with motivation to study, hence the first thing i do is motivate them to study. Remain flexible and prepare materials for the student. The student's tutor experience should supplement the learning they undergo at school. As such it is important to allow a degree of freedom in the topics discussed and covered. As such a tutor should always be flexible. Additionally, as the student's schedule might change regularly due to…

A tutor should provide guidance and assistance at all costs for the student they are teaching. It is the tutors responsibility to do the best they can in order to help the student reach their potential. I think to be dependable and reliable is the best thing for a student, so that they can feel safe with asking for help from their tutor. Motivation and confidence are two key elements of student success, if I can support them in achieving a sense of self-efficacy regarding these elements, they are bound to see improvement. Students often know where they fall short in their work, they just need motivation to improve those areas. Once they know that they can achieve this themselves,…

Inside South TurramurraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 7 student Sam worked through probability, focusing on basic chance experiments and interpreting results from tables.

In Year 10, Grace practised trigonometric graph sketching and applied the binomial theorem to expansion problems using structured examples.

For Year 12, Daniel revised calculus applications such as differentiation of exponentials and tackled financial maths questions involving compound interest, reviewing past paper questions for exam preparation.

Recent Challenges

Several process habits stood out across year levels.

In Year 11 calculus, one student often left revision exercises incomplete and didn't revisit assigned practice, making it hard to retain differentiation methods—"he is also not going back and doing revision exercises that are assigned to him."

Another, working on advanced algebra in Year 10, regularly struggled to start multi-step problems without hints, which slowed progress on unfamiliar application questions.

During a Year 12 statistics lesson, skipping written steps in probability led to errors with CDF and PDF relationships; this meant extra time was spent retracing calculations instead of tackling new material.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Turramurra noticed that one Year 12 student, after previously hesitating to ask for clarification, now regularly speaks up when stuck on tricky calculus questions and seeks feedback to double-check his approach.

Another high schooler has shifted from needing step-by-step guidance in coordinate geometry to tackling most problems independently and even choosing harder challenge questions during lessons.

Meanwhile, a younger student recently began outlining proofs unaided in class—something he'd struggled with just a week before—and completed the session by successfully presenting his reasoning without prompts.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Domenic has only had one session with Alvin, but he thinks he is 'awesome'. He likes the tips and tricks Alvin explains for solving maths problems. He's not keen on tutorials over holidays so will continue with more weekly lessons starting next week.

I am very happy with Aston. Joshua loved him and Aston is a great role Josh. Aston will be coming over for the second tutoring lesson tomorrow and I am pretty sure everything will work out perfectly.

We had one lesson with Taruka, she is lovely and Isabella enjoyed it. With school holiday and long weekend we haven't managed another but will definitely be starting up next week again.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Turramurra Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Turramurra Public School.
