A lot of students have the preconception that math is impossible and unenjoyable. If you can unlock a students joy for mathematical thinking and problem solving, than half the job is done. Mainly the ability to convey complicated mathematical concepts in a clear concise and (maybe most importantly) enjoyable…

I think a tutor has to be able to make the student want to learn, and make what they're learning interesting. A big part of this would be to get to know the student and cater to their individual needs and the unique way they learn. This also means maintaining a positive mindset and ensuring that the student knows that we are working together to…

Having struggled with math and earning D grades as a student, I underwent a transformative tutoring experience. My tutor prioritized connection, making concepts relatable, and instilling confidence. This shift from disliking to enjoying math highlighted the tutor's pivotal role in fostering a positive mindset. It emphasized the importance of a…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help students build confidence in themselves and the subject. It’s about helping them feel like they can really conquer it—so they’re on top of it, not afraid of it. I want students to walk away feeling capable, not anxious. My strengths as a tutor are my patience and my sensitivity to people’s…

Ensuring the student's questions are answered clearly and properly, even if it requires a lengthy process. It is important for the tutor be enthusiastic at all times without showing feelings of apathy, even when the student asks the same question many times. Being adaptable and patient are the things I find to be the most important. I feel that people are their own worst critic and not being able to do something right away can really take a toll on a person. Being able to adjust my teaching technique, being calm, and being supportive while a student may be struggling is so important to the students…

A tutor must be able to secure a positive impression of the subject in the student's mind, regardless of how arduous the subject content might be. A tutor is a third parent and must have immense patience to ensure that the child grasps each and every detail, even if they ask us to repeat what we taught. Besides, as tutors, we must always advocate…

As per my opinion, I think the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to be their friend and guide and help them as their friend. In my opinion, learning and getting good grades are two things that complement each other. Once students have a firm grasp of the knowledge points in the learning phase, then they will have enough confidence to cope with the exam. As a tutor, you need to help students absorb knowledge more easily at the stage of learning knowledge. For example,…

Inside South YarraTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Jamie worked on comparing and simplifying fractions, as well as converting between fractions, percentages, and decimals using targeted worksheets.

In Year 7, Jonas revised algebraic expressions and practiced calculating the perimeter of both regular and irregular shapes, also tackling pattern recognition with visual aids.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jamie focused on operations with negative numbers and explored probability through tree diagrams and statistics homework.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, Tommaso sometimes rushed through surface area questions in geometry, forgetting to include the base, which led to incomplete answers—his tutor noted, "don't forget adding up the area of the base."

Meanwhile, a Year 8 student's small and unclear handwriting during algebra problems caused confusion, even for himself when reviewing work.

In Year 6 maths, Jamie hesitated on multi-step worded questions and often doubted her own working; this hesitation made it hard for her to check solutions confidently.

During a senior revision session, unfinished notes and missing formula sheets left one student unprepared for practice tests.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in South Yarra recently noticed Jamie, a high school student, moving from hesitancy with negative numbers to tackling calculations and multi-step equations involving negatives independently—a shift from needing frequent reminders just weeks ago.

Tommaso, also in high school, used to rely on prompts for statistics work but now finds Q1, median, and Q3 quickly and draws box plots accurately without help.

Meanwhile, Jonas in primary school surprised his tutor by not only distinguishing factors from multiples—something he struggled with before—but also simplifying fractions accurately by dividing common factors.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Prahran / Windsor Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Christ Church Grammar School.
