The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is not to make sure that he/she gets a high score in their next assignment or exam. But, it is to see some improvement in their scores or performances. I understand that everyone's rate of abosrbing and understanding knowledge is different so I will not force a student to get an A or B. If I…

There are many important things when it comes down to tutoring a student, but to state a few in their order of importance: 1. Building confidence of a student 2. Motivating them to study, and to help find the balance between play and studies, as playing and hobbies are very critical at this stage of life. 3. Being a great mentor, clarifying…

A tutor can also be very impactful on a student's life as they are there to help them and are another resource a student can use if they need help. The most important thing a tutor can do is build trust and create a safe space for learning. When students feel comfortable, they’re more likely to engage, ask questions, and truly absorb the material. A tutor should also focus on helping students develop strong foundational skills, so they can tackle problems with confidence. Encouragement and…

A tutor’s mission is to help the student progress, enjoy and give his best. The most important thing is, more than methods or advice, giving confidence, which is the basis of good results. The most crucial things a tutor should have are: First, the tutor's own capability to solve the questions, to organise their time and to work under pressure. Second, to become a good tutor, a person has to be able to communicate and convey their ideas fully while being able to listen and understand what is in the student's mind. Last but not…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is help them gain knowledge on an idea that wasn't understood prior to your tutoring. Again, I think it is a rewarding feeling to know that someone has learned something new because of you! As a person, I am extremely patient and understanding. I've been told I'm a great teacher as I've…

Making them understand about a concept, and unleashing their own strengths so that they are able to solve problems on their own. The ultimate goal is ironically, to enable them to go ahead on their own without a tutor. Explaining concepts from the lecture in a language that is easy to understand. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is help a student become a confident and independent learner. While explaining difficult topics is important, the real value comes from teaching problem-solving skills that students can use on their own. By creating a supportive environment where it’s okay to make mistakes, a tutor helps a…

Identify the student's needs: A good tutor should take the time to understand the student's strengths and weaknesses, learning style, and goals. This can help the tutor tailor their teaching approach and create a personalized plan to help the student improve. Provide individualized instruction: Tutoring allows for one-on-one instruction, which…

A tutor is a role model and a figure for their students and it plays an important role to know them well. As a teacher role, it is important to remember being flexible, kind, gentle, and patience towards the child that we are teaching. I believe there are two immensely important things a tutor can do for a student. The first one is developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, so that a student can confidently solve problems that they haven't encountered before or when no one is there to guide them. And the second one is fostering a positive learning environment,…

Inside SouthbankTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 10 student Nathan focused on NAPLAN-style questions involving ratio and decimals, as well as strategies for tackling worded fractions problems.

In Year 11, Maya revised specialist mathematics topics such as stationary points and rates of change using practice SAC questions, alongside a review of coordinate geometry and integration by substitution.

For Year 12, Jack worked through complex numbers in both polar and arithmetic forms and practiced exam-style questions covering trigonometric proofs and compound angle identities.

Recent Challenges

During recent sessions, a Year 9 student worked confidently with algebra but "the algebra gets confusing at times"—particularly when manipulating fractions—making test questions harder to tackle under time pressure.

In Year 11 Chemistry, the challenge was recalling key information and applying molar ratios in multi-step pH problems; summarizing details from long worded questions was slow.

One Year 7 session highlighted that turning word problems into equations still feels unfamiliar: starting these questions independently takes extra effort.

When reviewing tests, reading each question carefully mattered—missing this step meant some errors repeated, even after feedback was given.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Southbank noticed Alec, a Year 10 student, now shows more interest during sessions and has started asking questions about tricky topics instead of staying quiet—something he avoided before.

In another session, a senior student preparing for exams independently worked through curve sketching problems and used a stepwise approach to solve them, which had been a stumbling block just weeks earlier.

Meanwhile, a Year 6 learner who previously rushed maths tests began pacing himself better; last lesson he finished all his questions with time left to review answers on his own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Southbank Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Victorian College Of The Arts Secondary School.
