Ensure that the knowledge they have been taught is ultimately retained and not just listened to. There's a difference between reading a lesson and teaching it effectively Being a recent high school graduate, I've had a greater breadth in the new study designs for many popular subjects such as chemistry, maths methods, specialist maths and physics.…

First, it would be to make learning fun. Second, it can be stressful for the student when they just don't seem to understand a certain topic. As a tutor, we should try to find alternatives when one method doesn't seem to work. Third, I think the best thing about being a tutor is shared learning. Sometimes, tutors just don't have the answers to…

I think the most significant thing that a tutor needs to do with students is to understand the level of students as some students will hide their grades and not understand the content of a lesson in a class. As a tutor, I need to softly ask them about their work at school and where are they studying so I am able to help them to do their homework…

For me, the most important thing is to show them and teach them to understand the process of the subject itself. This mean that they need to understand and see why and how the method works the way it is and why we teach the lesson this way. Another important factor is the student itself enjoying the lesson and learning process. This, for me can be…

Motivating the student and teaching him according to his own pace is of upmost importance. Also, it is crucial that the student's marks are improving and he starts to develop a liking for that subject. I find great pleasure in teaching and has the patience to teach each student according to his own pace. I also finding that motivating the student…

The single most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to instill in them a love of learning that helps them to understand how learning is more than simply copying facts and pasting it on paper but rather it is to help them understand their world at a deeper and wider level. The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is mentor them. Be their support pillar and motivate them to succeed. I believe the most important thing for a tutor is to listen to and understand their student's weaknesses and strengths. Often I find many people lack personalisation and simply follow the curriculum. I like to take a different approach where I really personalise my teaching depending on the student's capabilities and learning style. I also find…

One important thing a tutor can do for a student is to ensure communicating in a manner that motivates the student and makes them feel confident in the content they are learning. This could be by starting off with easier practice and gradually testing more of the student's abilities. This way, the student is able to warm-up with do-able questions…

Paying attention on them. A student sometimes have fear and won't ask their doubts. As tutors we must pay attention to them and see what they need. If not the students won't achieve their goals. Having compassion. Being proficient in a subject does not guarantee that the student will understand as deeply as the tutor. Inside SpotswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia worked through the full chapter on polynomials, including applying the factor and remainder theorems and solving cubic equations, with time spent sketching cubic graphs from equations.

Year 10 student Ethan focused on advanced quadratic techniques such as completing the square and tackling past exam questions, plus reviewed graph domains and ranges using practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava explored Pythagoras' theorem alongside SOH CAH TOA for right-angled triangles, then practised algebraic expansion and binomial expansions to build confidence ahead of a test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, a student repeatedly left their workbook at home, leading to extra time spent reconstructing missed examples rather than practicing equations, as one tutor noted.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for exams tended to focus only on textbook questions they already found easy, avoiding unfamiliar problem types—this limited exposure to the trickier material expected in assessments.

In senior years, several students submitted incomplete homework or skipped revision of past exam topics, which meant gaps persisted in areas like circular functions and piecewise graphs; essential feedback was missed and confidence lagged when new question styles appeared.

Recent Achievements

Now confidently tackles all types of factorisation problems, a Year 10 student in Spotswood who used to struggle with factorisation is even choosing new approaches without prompting.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who would previously hesitate when faced with tough SOH CAH TOA and Pythagoras questions began identifying her own mistakes and quickly grasped index laws that once seemed intimidating.

Meanwhile, one of the primary students has started asking for help instead of quietly skipping hard questions—this week she explained which homework step confused her before trying again herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Spotswood Primary School.
