Providing as much detail in feedback and marking somewhat harsher than what is needed so that students are benefiting from as much feedback so that they can improve. With this feedback, providing very specific examples of how to improve instead of saying generalised criticisms. Create links with stuff that's already been learnt so that students…

The most important thing a tutor can do for their student is to listen to them. If you do not have two way communication a lot of details can be lost in translation or misunderstood . I am patient and I adapt to my students learning style in order to have effective communication. I plan material ahead of the lesson to ensure that the time I have…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is giving enough time for the student who requires that time for understanding. Some students may require more time and a tutor should always be able to provide them with time and efforts. My strength as a tutor is the connection I get with the students. Also, my strength is a tutor is my…

The most important thing apart from helping the student understand that they can solve things on their own, is teaching the student how to study the subject. This way, the student will gradually understand how learning the subject works. I have a lot of patience and I am very good at using logistics. I can explain the same thing in many different…

The most important thing is to learn what the student needs. It is easy to go off track and teach all the information you know, but I believe the students' request come first. Even though the students might not know what they need, the tutor should work with them and identify which areas the student need improvements on. Hence, the tutor could…

The most important things a tutor can do is knowing the right way to support and motivate the student to grow academically. I believe the most important thing a tutor can do is to wear students' shoes, which means to understand their strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles. Once we recognise how each student learns best, we can adapt our explanations and materials to support them more effectively. I used to struggle with some of these subjects myself, which helps me…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

To me the most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be compassionate, dedicated, understanding and patient. The two most important things would be to clear the basics of the subject and to keep the student interested in it. Most of the students develop phobia of maths or stop being interested in the subject because they do not understand the basics. This in turn, leads them to not focus on the subject even if they are capable of doing good in it or they…

I believe that each student should be heard in the classroom and encouraged to contribute to discussions. Inside SpotswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia worked through the full chapter on polynomials, including applying the factor and remainder theorems and solving cubic equations, with time spent sketching cubic graphs from equations.

Year 10 student Ethan focused on advanced quadratic techniques such as completing the square and tackling past exam questions, plus reviewed graph domains and ranges using practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava explored Pythagoras' theorem alongside SOH CAH TOA for right-angled triangles, then practised algebraic expansion and binomial expansions to build confidence ahead of a test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, a student repeatedly left their workbook at home, leading to extra time spent reconstructing missed examples rather than practicing equations, as one tutor noted.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for exams tended to focus only on textbook questions they already found easy, avoiding unfamiliar problem types—this limited exposure to the trickier material expected in assessments.

In senior years, several students submitted incomplete homework or skipped revision of past exam topics, which meant gaps persisted in areas like circular functions and piecewise graphs; essential feedback was missed and confidence lagged when new question styles appeared.

Recent Achievements

Now confidently tackles all types of factorisation problems, a Year 10 student in Spotswood who used to struggle with factorisation is even choosing new approaches without prompting.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who would previously hesitate when faced with tough SOH CAH TOA and Pythagoras questions began identifying her own mistakes and quickly grasped index laws that once seemed intimidating.

Meanwhile, one of the primary students has started asking for help instead of quietly skipping hard questions—this week she explained which homework step confused her before trying again herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Spotswood Primary School.
