As a tutor, I think it's important to be there for them. Learning loads of new concepts almost every second day can be overwhelming and with that, all students have their strengths and weaknesses. Thus as a tutor it would be a good measure to know their strengths and weaknesses and work with them through their weaknesses and add them to the list…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student to lift them up what they feel mostly interested while learning anything. To motivate them while they do something new and bring any new idea to resolve any problem. I believe taking the time with each individual student and connecting with them on a personal level is the most important thing as each student is going through different experiences and difficulties. I believe this is the difference between being a tutor to becoming a mentor as well which will elevate the students' skills in many ways not only in…

For a student, the most essential thing a tutor can do is imparting complete knowledge as half knowledge is dangerous. So, when a child is fully aware of something, he can be confident enough to explore more beyond his imagination. A tutor must be resilient enough to teach students in the best way. The strength of a tutor lies in his knowledge and…

I think that a good tutor should be able to inspire and motivate their student to do well. They should also be able to relate with the student and understand how they learn best so that they can teach them well. They must also have the skill set and knowledge to explain difficult concepts. I think that I'd be really committed as a tutor and make a…

Treat each student as an individual person. The same methods of tutoring might not apply on the other. Moreover patience is necessary. Tutors should maintain a pace comfortable for the student. Tutors should be humble enough to admit if they don't know few answers and should be able to research and provide the answers to the student. I learn…

A tutor can guide and motivate his/her students to achieve their intended goals and help them to create a pathway for their future. I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is truly be their well-wisher. I think students are coming to tutors because they know they need help. Acknowledging that they took that step, understanding the knowledge base with which they're there, teaching them in easy terms, and creating a long term plan for their studies is the…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is mentor them. Be their support pillar and motivate them to succeed. Inside SpotswoodTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Olivia worked through the full chapter on polynomials, including applying the factor and remainder theorems and solving cubic equations, with time spent sketching cubic graphs from equations.

Year 10 student Ethan focused on advanced quadratic techniques such as completing the square and tackling past exam questions, plus reviewed graph domains and ranges using practice problems.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Ava explored Pythagoras' theorem alongside SOH CAH TOA for right-angled triangles, then practised algebraic expansion and binomial expansions to build confidence ahead of a test.

Recent Challenges

In Year 8 algebra, a student repeatedly left their workbook at home, leading to extra time spent reconstructing missed examples rather than practicing equations, as one tutor noted.

Meanwhile, a Year 10 student preparing for exams tended to focus only on textbook questions they already found easy, avoiding unfamiliar problem types—this limited exposure to the trickier material expected in assessments.

In senior years, several students submitted incomplete homework or skipped revision of past exam topics, which meant gaps persisted in areas like circular functions and piecewise graphs; essential feedback was missed and confidence lagged when new question styles appeared.

Recent Achievements

Now confidently tackles all types of factorisation problems, a Year 10 student in Spotswood who used to struggle with factorisation is even choosing new approaches without prompting.

In a recent session, a Year 8 student who would previously hesitate when faced with tough SOH CAH TOA and Pythagoras questions began identifying her own mistakes and quickly grasped index laws that once seemed intimidating.

Meanwhile, one of the primary students has started asking for help instead of quietly skipping hard questions—this week she explained which homework step confused her before trying again herself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Yarraville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Spotswood Primary School.
