I believe the most important thing an economics tutor can do for students is to guide and assist them to complete assignments and homework rather than completing it for them. This will not only allow them to ask questions and gain a basic understanding of how to do a task, but it will also allow them to successfully complete a similar task without…

I realize tutoring is not just about being a private teacher who delivers knowledge outside of school. It is also about being a mentor, a facilitator, a friend who can help learners grow and develop good habits in order to have the best performance in learning. Besides, the tutor is the one who understand the student' strengths and weaknesses in…

A tutor is someone who just not explains what is right or wrong or not or just gives the answer directly, but instead makes sure that the student, one is teaching has understood the concept extremely well and can relate to his or her own work and can work perfectly without the tutor's help. Also, the tutor should be aware how the student works…

In my opinion, an economics tutor must be able to empathize with the student and create a safe space for them. Its important to be constructive and patient especially with the ones that take time to grasp topics. One must keep instructions clear and always strive to empower the child by focusing on their strengths. Engage them instead of lecturing…

In my view, an economics tutor's primary role is to not just convey information, but to inspire and guide students to become independent learners. This involves creating a supportive and encouraging atmosphere where students feel safe to explore their questions and make mistakes. A tutor should also identify a student's individual strengths and…

Inside St AgnesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Marley revised area of rectangles, triangles, and circles using step-by-step worked examples.

For Year 9, Olivia practised algebraic factorisation and surd simplification with a focus on null factor law.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student Ben tackled growth and decay problems alongside work on exponential functions and logarithms to consolidate understanding for upcoming assessments.

Recent Challenges

In Year 7 algebra, one student avoided writing working and instead "did everything in one go," leading to repeated errors when entering calculations into the scientific calculator.

For a Year 9 test, over-reliance on cheat sheets and hesitation to skip time-consuming questions meant less time was spent on high-value problems.

In a Year 11 lesson, confusion with units—especially converting area measures—caused mistakes that weren't always spotted during revision.

A Year 4 student's workbook showed unclear layout when dividing fractions, making it hard to check answers or spot pattern errors; this left them feeling unsure about next steps after each question.

Recent Achievements

One St Agnes tutor noticed a big shift in a Year 9 student who, after struggling to distinguish between mark-ups and mark-offs, could finally solve most percentage problems on his own by the end of their session—he started off confusing "% of price" with final sale amounts but got it right after guided practice.

A Year 11 student who was hesitant about algebra at first began tackling equations independently, even redoing mistakes without prompting and getting almost all answers correct.

Meanwhile, a Year 5 student surprised her tutor by quickly picking up how to round decimals and confidently solved area-of-circle questions using the formula without help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are very impressed with Geoff. He was very kind and engaging with Michael today. Thank you.

Gary is doing a great job and Emilee is really appreciative of their time together.

Carl has enjoyed working with both his tutors this year and is well prepared for his VCE math methods exams. Having a personal tutor, even for a student like Carl who is already achieving excellent academic results, has helped relieve some of the stress of VCE and enabled him to sort out areas he wanted to work on with more depth.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as City of Tea Tree Gully Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ridgehaven Primary School.
