I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them confident and passionate about what they are studying. I believe the more a student enjoys study the better their results will be, so a tutor should always strive to not only make the lesson educational but fun as well. I think my strengths as a tutor are my enjoyment…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to be someone there to listen to them, someone there to guide them through their academic problems (not just the academics but the mindset as well) and someone who they feel is having a positive impact on their learning experience. Throughout high school, I would help many of my colleagues…

To empathise with students when they struggle, I believe that different students will learn at different paces; we, as teachers, need to adjust teaching styles to better assist students in learning. I am patient, and constantly assess students' stress points to aid them in their…

Create a relationship which is safe and respected, in order to help the student achieve the highest marks possible. This relationship can be a friendly relationship or more of an "older sibling helping a younger sibling" type of relationship. I am able to relate difficult topics to small/simple scenarios to help the student understand. I am able…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to make the learning process fun, because at the end of the day, if the student isn't enjoying what they are doing(whether it be succeeding or seeing improvement), they aren't going to remember anything. The learning process has to be a clear pathway, with no maybes, and a fun, enjoyable time. I believe…

A good tutor should be able to provide perspective. A good tutor should also be able to listen and understand the student so that the most effective learning approach can take place. A tutor should be adaptable. Patience; as the youngest member in my family I've had to learn to be patient, about everything, even the simple task of waiting to use…

Firstly, a tutor has to make sure he makes the students like his subject. I think this is foremost when it comes to teaching; to develop the interest in the student to learn the subject. Secondly adaptability is a necessary skill among tutors. A tutor should be able to identify quickly if a certain methodology of teaching doesn't work for a…

Tutors play an important role in a student's life. They play an important role in building students future and inspiring them to be a responsible and capable individual as an adult. Always go back to the basics, as many students hold themselves to ask questions they think of as "irrelevant" or "common sense", when in reality it's those questions the one's building real knowledge and solid foundations. That's why as a tutor the most important thing I can do is go beyond what they ask me or what their classes teach, as some…

Most importantly, listen! A lot of students don't know where they are struggling but give it away with the questions they ask or the steps they take to try and solve problems. Have more than one method or way of explaining things. People have different learning styles and different past experience to attach new things onto. Being organised,…

On my opinion a tutor should bring up their habit to ask more, be more interested in learning new things, and not just only improving their answering skills in the exam to get high marks/ grades. I am patient with the kids and know how they will be come attentive and urge to learn more. For some cases, by using drawings can help the children learn…

Inside St JamesTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 6 student Mieke worked on visualising data and interpreting graphs, then solved word problems involving graphing data.

In Year 10, Ronja focused on ionic equations and practised calculating titration quantities using stoichiometric ratios.

For Year 11, Fatima reviewed redox equations and oxidation numbers before revisiting subatomic particles and tackling linear equations relevant to chemistry calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 Chemistry, the student still shows some minor mistakes in writing chemical formulas, especially when revising ionic and polyatomic ions—missteps that lingered after sessions unless earlier material was rechecked.

A Year 9 student did not complete assigned homework or maintain a school notebook, making it difficult to track progress in new math concepts.

For a Year 6 learner, untidy handwriting made written work hard to read, leading to confusion during revision.

In English (Year 10), one student hesitated to organize thoughts on paper, often leaving drafts unfinished; as the tutor noted, "she writes well but is often hesitant."

Recent Achievements

One St James tutor noticed a Year 11 student who previously relied heavily on guidance now summarising the main steps for balancing ionic equations and explaining the stoichiometric ratio's importance in titration problems—an area that had caused confusion before.

In another session, a high schooler began independently solving questions after gaps in balancing half-equations were addressed; she tackled most homework with minimal help, marking a real shift from earlier sessions.

Meanwhile, a younger student who used to rush through English assignments is now catching silly mistakes by reviewing his work more carefully, leading to clearer handwriting and fewer errors overall.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Victoria Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Millen Primary School.
