I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do to a student is to make them motivated to learn the subject, whether that be from the passion of the tutor or from the interest that they develop for that subject over time. I am really good at explaining concepts and simplifying them in a way that the students could understand them. I was…

Every student has different abilities and if he is weak in one subject doesn't mean he is a weak student. A good tutor can find out his ability and develop that. I am also good at selecting important questions from the guide books, assigning home works etc so that students can practise the subject better. I am great at explaining the complex…

A tutor can develop a passion of learning in a student so that a student can learn and grow even when the teacher is with the student or not. Its similar to teach a person how to fish instead giving them fish to eat. If student learn how to learn on their own, how to solve problems, and what should be the approach to a problem then it is more than…

To support and give great motivation to the student is the most important thing. Having the thought that everybody can learn and be able to success in learning if the student found interest in the subject. I often explain the solution with step by step method, trying to simplify complex solution, and I often use easier example or simulation in…

1. Convey to the student that if they are finding a subject hard, it is natural. They just haven't found a way that works for them and we are willing to explore that 2. A tutor should understand their student's potential and work accordingly and find ways of teaching that work for them 3. Be patient with a student and have empathy and give them…

First and foremost, I would argue that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to provide motivation and encouragement; cultivating the student's desire to learn and succeed. If this is achieved, academic success simply becomes a by-product. Secondly, a tutor must act as a resource that complements learning within a school…

I think the most important role of the tutor is to analyse and reflect on a student's learning and problem-solving approach methods, in order to provide meaningful adjustments for greater comfort and confidence going forward. In other words, the identification of barriers to learning is the most crucial point of a tutor's action, as it is the…

Explaining the concepts clearly and easily along with appropriate examples are the must for a tutor. But, more importantly, a tutor should help students cultivate good habits like hard work, discipline, confidence, time management etc. By doing so, a student not only grows academically but also personally. And this can help them in the future. I…

It is highly important for a tutor to be able to listen to where a student is struggling and use this information to be able to adapt their teachings to each student personally. It is also important for a tutor to teach good study habits to students so that they may further their studies independently. I am a highly patient person which would help…

I tutor can do so much more than just help with studies and exams. A teacher is a person who is able to inspire his students. I believe that a teacher must be able to develop an interest in the heart of the student. So as a teacher our main motive should always be able to make the student motivated for studies. The tutoring with Semini is going very well.
Diana, Elwood

Inside St Kilda EastTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Anthony practised decimals, focusing on tenths and hundredths using visual models.

Year 9 student Ollie reviewed key skills from his end-of-year maths exam, including univariate statistics (like histograms and median) and perimeter/area of composite shapes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Leo worked through time series analysis and revised his recent test on regression analysis and data transformation.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was observed repeatedly skipping written steps in algebra, saying "I can do this in my head"—but sign errors kept creeping in and took extra time to fix.

In VCE Maths, another student relied heavily on their calculator for financial questions but struggled when context required combining calculator results with written reasoning.

One Year 2 learner avoided learning single-digit addition facts, instead counting each time; as a tutor noted, "she uses counting to avoid knowing them." This led to slower progress and made more complex problems feel overwhelming when automatic recall would have helped.

Recent Achievements

One St Kilda East tutor noticed a big shift with a Year 11 student who, after weeks of hesitating to ask questions, began coming to sessions prepared with her own list—now steering discussions towards what she finds tricky in maths.

In a recent high school session, another student who previously guessed at answers started openly seeking clarification on the difference between functions and relations, leading to genuine understanding.

Meanwhile, a younger primary student who once struggled to focus managed to factorise numbers independently for the first time and finished all practice problems without help.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

We are happy at this stage and Leyla is saying that she likes the way Zoe is teaching her. We are happy with Zoe as she is a very nice lady and very good teacher.

We are delighted with Dexter. She and Carly get along very well and she makes the tutoring process seamless and pleasant. Carly is responding very well to Dexter and they've already and good progress.

We have been very happy with Tako and feel she has really assisted our children to gain greater confidence with their math work and to work through math steps carefully, which was our key goal. We have also been impressed with the organisation of the tutoring through your services.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as St Kilda Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Yeshivah College.
