The most important thing of a tutor is the ability to impart knowledge in a suitable, correct and effective way to the students. Good knowledge is important, but without the ability to impart knowledge, teaching will never be successful. I have 4 main strengths. Firstly, I love children and love teaching. Secondly, I have high patience and am…

I think the most important steps are, making sure the student has understood, even if you have to re-explain the concept an n number of times or in a multiple different ways, and providing support whenever the student needs it. I hate tutors that charge for help given outside of their class times, or those who specifically arrange for short…

Secondly, the tutor needs to build a good rapport with his student which will build the students trust and confidence which will help the tutor to communicate better with his student. Thirdly, a tutor…

From my experience, these are the most crucial things that a tutor can do for a student: - Provide personalized support: A good tutor should be able to recognize the student's potential and tailor their approach to fit the student's needs. - Motivate and encourage: Learning can be challenging and frustrating at times, so a good tutor should…

A good tutor should not only teach students the answers to questions, but also the principles and processes behind the questions. Tutors must have clear communication and explanation skills to ensure students fully understand the course. In addition, it is also very important to give appropriate encouragement to students. Provide the student with confidence in their own learning ability. Helping students find learning methods that work for THEM, which they can continue to use in the future is the most important thing, and also the most satisfying thing for me as tutor. The most important thing is to communicate on a level that is with the students so they can understand the topics you are teaching, so they still feel connected and engaged in learning. In addition, also having a variety of strategies as one size does not fit all so it is about finding the best fit for each student. My strength is to provide…

A tutor can listen to the student before giving advice or teaching. Listening is important as it allows a tutor to understand why the student may be having difficulties grasping subjects or topics and choose alternative strategies to help the student. Explaining a topic over and over again often doesn't work and a tutor needs to be open to hearing…

For me, every student may have a different receptive ability. Therefore, a tutor need to be patient for the first time to understand their students. And then, try to teach them for understanding the whole picture, the fundamentals rather than showing them the ways to solve a particular exercise without any combination with other knowledge. Passion…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for student is to understand the best learning method of their students, and suit the teaching approach to that. This is important because each students have different and sometimes unique effective method of studying, hence a uniform approach of teaching to all students don't always work. This is…

I think I huge part of it is often confidence. I have found most students already understand and are able to do the work however they don’t have the confidence to back themselves. Becoming a lifelong role model is crucial in supporting students. Many of them keep their issues hidden, and as adults, we may overlook or avoid addressing these concerns. Some students might not even recognize they have problems. Being a dependable role model and a safe space for them are among the most vital ways to help them. Patience: Having…

Listen to the student. I think it's important that tutors listen to their students to understand their strengths and weaknesses, and get to know them. By doing this, you'll be able to help them in the way that works best for them, in the areas that they're struggling with the most. Sometimes there are things outside of schoolwork that make it hard…

I believe that the most important thing that a tutor can do for a student is to give them the enjoyment from studying. Inside St Kilda WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Matthew worked on adding, multiplying, and dividing fractions as well as converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Amisha tackled trigonometry by combining bearings with SOHCAHTOA and also reviewed statistics.

For Year 12, Will focused on advanced essay writing for English by refining comparative analysis of Tracks and Into the Wild and developing language analysis skills through rewriting flagged sections based on teacher feedback.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4 maths, incomplete memorization of multiplication tables repeatedly disrupted progress with fractions and long division; "she still has trouble with her 7, 8 and 9 times tables," noted one tutor, leading to confusion when simplifying or comparing values.

For a Year 10 English student, unfinished homework and unclear communication—such as bringing work mostly finished instead of submitting it in advance—meant less targeted feedback during sessions.

At the senior level (Years 11–12), missed practice questions and only reviewing notes (rather than tackling exam-style problems) left conceptual gaps in Physics, making it harder to solve complex problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in St Kilda West noticed one Year 10 student who previously rushed through probability questions now pausing to identify outliers before calculating answers—she's actively double-checking her thinking, which is a big shift from earlier sessions.

In senior maths, Matthew has started explaining his reasoning out loud while tackling tricky proof problems; last week he worked through a complex induction question with much less prompting than before.

Meanwhile, Will (Year 12 English) recently began emailing his essay plans for feedback ahead of time instead of waiting for reminders, showing more self-management and initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Middle Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kilda Park Primary School.
