The first and foremost is being patient. Not everyone can learn and understand concepts at the same pace, so patience is very important. Trying different learning styles when the initial learning style doesn't work is another one, because people don't learn the same way. I'm very good at breaking down complex concepts into clear,…

I think it is important for tutors to be able to identify which areas students struggle with, then find a way to break it down and explain it to students so they fully understand. Tutors need to be patient and also be able to listen to what questions the students have, understand the problem and then explain the question to them slowly. Tutors…

In my opinion, the role of a tutor goes beyond simply imparting knowledge. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to inspire confidence, make them love learning, and equip them with the tools to thrive independently. It's about being a guiding light through challenges, a source of motivation, and a trusted resource for…

The tutor has so many key responsibilities and actions to do. As he/she needs to aware that individuals are understanding, there should be effective communication, setting realistic goals, creating a supportive environment and also providing them a constructive feedback. In addition to teaching academic knowledge, tutors need to point out directions for students and divide difficult tasks into steps to cultivate students' problem-solving ability. Finding the gaps, especially when they are gaps from prior in the scaffolding process that will only amplify over time. Give their time in order to further assist the student and go the extra mile instead of doing just enough. This can heavily impact the student's learning experience as they know that there is someone willing to help them improve. I believe that there shouldn't be overworking the student but the student shouldn't be too relaxed when working. This…

Teaching them the curriculum and making them score higher is not alone enough making them realize what they are capable of. Not every student are good with their IQ, their IQ Capacity does not judge what they can do. All students have a unique personality and skill it's us the tutors should make them understand that they can do a lot more than…

Good tutors should be able to help students improve and not dependent on them, they should be able to help a student solve problems and not simply giving them answers. In addition, tutors also have to be patient as not all students have the same learning abilities. Lastly, I think a tutor should put in the effort to understand both the materials…

In order for the tutoring sessions to be efficient, it is essential that a good relationship be established between the tutor and the student. Often, this relationship is created quickly, but at other times, it may take a few sessions before the student opens up. The success of this relationship reveals the personalities of each of them, but it…

A good tutor will be patient as well as a good listener. Addressing the students' queries, errors with honesty yet with empathy. Inside St Kilda WestTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student Matthew worked on adding, multiplying, and dividing fractions as well as converting between percentages, decimals, and fractions.

In Year 9, Amisha tackled trigonometry by combining bearings with SOHCAHTOA and also reviewed statistics.

For Year 12, Will focused on advanced essay writing for English by refining comparative analysis of Tracks and Into the Wild and developing language analysis skills through rewriting flagged sections based on teacher feedback.

Recent Challenges

In Year 3–4 maths, incomplete memorization of multiplication tables repeatedly disrupted progress with fractions and long division; "she still has trouble with her 7, 8 and 9 times tables," noted one tutor, leading to confusion when simplifying or comparing values.

For a Year 10 English student, unfinished homework and unclear communication—such as bringing work mostly finished instead of submitting it in advance—meant less targeted feedback during sessions.

At the senior level (Years 11–12), missed practice questions and only reviewing notes (rather than tackling exam-style problems) left conceptual gaps in Physics, making it harder to solve complex problems under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in St Kilda West noticed one Year 10 student who previously rushed through probability questions now pausing to identify outliers before calculating answers—she's actively double-checking her thinking, which is a big shift from earlier sessions.

In senior maths, Matthew has started explaining his reasoning out loud while tackling tricky proof problems; last week he worked through a complex induction question with much less prompting than before.

Meanwhile, Will (Year 12 English) recently began emailing his essay plans for feedback ahead of time instead of waiting for reminders, showing more self-management and initiative.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Middle Park Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Kilda Park Primary School.
