Other then plugging in knowledge into the student head, the most important thing a tutor can do is having the student feel accompanied. Exams and homework are tough for students and they need help rather knowledge or psychological help. In the moment they need help, the tutor should stay with the student and offer helping hand. That is the most…

I think the most important thing to do is listen. No one student is the same, and this can make a significant difference to an approach. I am a good listener, which means I can help strategically where they may need…

In my opinion, the two most important skills for tutoring are patience and positivity. As the ability to remain calm and respectful, and having a positive attitude can make the difference between a motivated student and an unmotivated student. I strongly believe a good tutor must be able to explain complicated concepts in a way that 'makes sense'…

Show the student how manageable getting good grades in a subject really is and how capable they are of doing so. Often students may think that a subject is really hard to do well in or they are not good enough, but it’s just a matter of learning things the correct way and putting in the hours and then they will see it’s not actually as hard as…

The most important thing as tutor can do is never leave the student specially in the needy times. If everything is difficult, the teacher should make a way to lighten the situation. Setting goals are very important as to assess the student's performance. I don't make the learning situation too heavy. The ability to learn is not restricted by how…

To actually be committed to helping the student and genuinely wanting to help the student is most important in my opinion. I have personally had tutors who excelled in their own academics, but were not genuinely wanting to tutor - unfortunately this meant that they did not give the best explanations and guidance they could give to me. I met a…

I believe helping a student be able to grow academically within themselves and helping them understand how they learn is the most important thing I can do for a student. I think, since I am young I can relate as a tutor, specially to older kids. I believe I am fun and down to earth and an easy person to get along…

First and foremost I think that is having patience. People do not all learn in the same way and as I mentioned before, when teaching somebody, half the job is just figuring out the best way to frame it, something which requires patience and perseverance. What is also important as a tutor is not just telling students what they need to know, but…

I think the most important things are to build confidence and make the subject relevant. This goes beyond just explaining problems. It is important that a tutor can transform a student's mindset from "I'm bad at this" to "I can figure this out." It's about being a mentor who helps them trust their own ability to solve problems. I know from my…

A tutor should be more than someone who lectures and instead be someone who brings value through listening and understanding challenges and working through them with the student to find solutions. A tutor can enable a student to understand a subject, not just enough knowledge to pass. A tutor can teach more than just a syllabus, but also learning…

The most important thing a tutor can do is to inspire passion; a person who is sincerely interested in a subject and has a drive to continue delving into it will naturally go much further and achieve much higher then an unmotivated genius no matter the intellect as they will enjoy the entire journey of learning and not just focus on the results. The EzyMath team has been very easy to work with - our tutor is very punctual, proactive, polite, flexible, and my child has been enjoying her lessons! She has been picking up new concepts and her confidence has increased! The online team has also been great, in particular their communication is excellent (they are prompt to reply to emails and check in regularly). I am really happy overall with the service they are providing.

Inside St LuciaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 Cara spent several sessions strengthening her foundation in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, gradually moving on to fractions and exploring angles using diagrams.

Year 8 Arnav focused on data analysis for a maths assignment, specifically comparing two groups using mean, median, and mode while interpreting results from charts.

Meanwhile, Year 9 Masiha tackled trigonometry concepts including right-angled triangles (sin, cos, tan) and progressed to three-digit bearings in later lessons.

Recent Challenges

In Year 4 mathematics, Cara repeatedly relied on a "cheat sheet" for times tables and hesitated when faced with multiplication or division involving larger numbers. As one tutor noted, "she tended to guess answers instead of working through each step," especially when the material wasn't her favourite.

In senior biology (Year 12), Arnav struggled to integrate others' research into his own writing and found it difficult to synthesize several sources into a single argument. This led to drafts that were overly detailed but lacked cohesion—drafting became overwhelming rather than productive when he felt pressured to get it perfect in one go.

Recent Achievements

A recent St Lucia tutoring session saw one Year 10 student move from hesitating with multi-step maths problems to confidently working through each stage and even catching their own small errors without prompting.

Meanwhile, a Year 11 student who used to get frustrated with data analysis now independently identifies patterns in statistics and explains what the results mean, showing more initiative than before.

In Year 5, Cara—who was previously quiet during lessons—has started raising her hand for help when stuck and finished an entire set of division questions on her own for the first time.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as West End Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Ironside State School.
