To reassure them that having a tutor and needing a bit of extra help is nothing to be ashamed of. Moreover than learning the tasks, helping them feel they're capable of more than they think they are. I am able to think outside the box when it comes to tutoring and find that using mnemonics, rhymes and even little songs that may help students to…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to make them want to study a topic, to present a topic in a certain way that makes the student more enthusiastic to learn. Although understanding a subject is extremely important, I believe the students' willingness to learn is equally important as trying to teach a student to…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to open a rapport that makes them feel safe and understood, an environment where they are not afraid to try and even not afraid to fail, in the knowledge that with help and direction they can try again and do better. With the acceptance that 1 style (or even 10 styles!) of teaching…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do is to get a proper understanding of the level of mathematical 'maturity' of a specific student, rather than just assuming a certain background knowledge. Once this is established, it's possible to get the core of what exactly a student is struggling with (usually a particular fundamental concept) and…

I think a tutor should be able to tell if their student understands something or not, often they don't say it outright and asking them directly might not get them to admit it. So by asking them to solve a question that indirectly uses the concept might help us figure out if they're having trouble or not. Students should also feel comfortable with…

According to me, the most important thing as a tutor is to try and try until the student understands, although it takes a lot of patience and time. It is also important to explore the student's best way of learning, which may include audio, visual, or kinesthetic, and make efforts to teach them accordingly. As a tutor, I first make my students…

I believe that a tutor should be able to build relationships with a student where the students are provided with an environment where they are heard and observed. I think this allows tutors to strategize methods in helping students progress, learn and succeed. This must be done with patience, constant assessment of student's progress, and…

In my opinion, I think that it is important to understand every student is different and has their way of learning. It is important for a tutor to identify and tailor a plan for each student so that they are learning efficiently. For example, as I am a visual and auditory learner, I learn most efficiently by watching lectures and videos and less…

As a tutor, it is very important that the teacher becomes an inspiration to the student. The passion with which the tutor teaches the student matters a lot and this also influences the students influence on the subject. When a tutor teaches the student with passion, the student is definitely going to like the subject and learn with full passion as…

A good tutor needs to understand the student's needs and areas of weakness and work on them. A tutor can engage more in helping the student understand specific concepts and make the environment of teaching interesting. The teaching environment can be made interesting by giving the students a reason to learn the concepts and showing real-world…

I think the most important thing is making the student feel comfortable asking questions. A tutor should focus on understanding where the student is getting stuck and help them build confidence, not just give answers. I'm patient and I don't rush students. If something doesn't click the first time, I'm happy to explain it again in a different way.…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is pose as their mentor than just a teacher. By doing this, a student will feel safe, and empowered; this in turn will make them learn better. Moreover, it is important for a tutor to build their confidence. It is essential to build on the weak areas of a student. Additionally, a…

I also believe that a great tutor should be able to adapt their approach to match the student they are tutoring, as every person learns…

A tutor should create a safe space for a student so that he/she can reach out whenever needed. Through this, a student will feel more comfortable in his/her studies and will acquire more confidence since they will have the opportunity to be more inquisitive. They will be more eager to learn and explore. My biggest strength as a tutor is patience.…

Local Reviews

Stephan has been tutoring my daughter for a couple of years now. He is approachable, professional and excellent tutor. Eliza has gained and maintained her confidence in Maths which is especially important in Year 12. Stephan helped her transition to Zoom tutoring last year when he couldn't come to our house and this was so successful they continued their sessions remotely. I highly recommend Stephan!

Inside St MorrisTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Pranavi practised adding fractions with different denominators and converting between improper fractions and mixed numbers, using visual models to reinforce the process.

Year 7 student Milly worked on applying angle terminology, including supplementary and complementary angles, as well as revising operations with negative numbers for her test review.

For Year 10 student Harrison, the lesson focused on solving quadratic equations using the null factor law, with step-by-step practice on breaking down each equation.

Recent Challenges

In Year 9 algebra, a student hesitated to show all working when expanding brackets, which led to confusion about like terms and missed negative signs—she often expressed the answer verbally but struggled to write it on paper.

In Year 7 maths, another student sometimes misplaced digits in multi-step addition (e.g., placing the '3' from 309 in the thousands column), causing repeated calculation errors.

A Year 4 student skipped double-checking decimal placement during division by 1000s, leading to mistakes like moving the decimal only two places instead of three. These moments slowed progress and required extra time to clarify foundational concepts.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in St Morris noticed Milly, a high school student, has become much more independent with angle classification—she can now work out even tricky reflex angles and solve for unknowns using supplementary and complementary rules after struggling before.

Harrison, also in high school, showed real growth in trigonometry; he started the session needing reminders but was later able to remember ratios and consistently show his working when finding side lengths.

Meanwhile, one younger student who previously hesitated to ask for help is now openly letting her tutor know when she's stuck, making it easier to target explanations.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Norwood Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Trinity Gardens School.
