It is necessary for teachers to be very conversant not only with academic and professional subjects but should possess adequate knowledge in other spheres such as humanities, new social trends, climatic changes, post-modern ideologies etc. Reading, dwelling in social media and conversations with people indifferent to their ages are useful…

I think it is the ability to understand the student's capability and their needs. Therefore, as a tutor, I can provide personalised learning lessons that are suitable to the student, hence, they can still progress at their own pace without too much pressure. The most important quality required as a tutor is my good subject knowledge. In addition,…

Make them like learning for the sake of learning rather than chase after a mark. We as humans love learning but schools and other institutions often encourage chasing certain metrics rather than curiosity and wonder when it comes to learning a subject I can give constructive feedback on a student based on their performance and I encourage them to…

For me, the most important thing is helping students actually enjoy math and feel comfortable with the process of not knowing right away. A lot of math is about sitting with that discomfort, resisting the urge to panic, and trusting that if you think logically, you’ll find a way through—even if it’s not the “textbook†method. I want…

The most important thing a tutor can do is help their students to see the value and potential in themselves. Through helping students find a learning style (and pace) that suits them and encouraging them to develop their skills in a wide range of subjects, tutors give students the foundation of confidence and understanding. I'm patient when it…

To go an extra step for his students and understand what the student is going through would be the most important things a tutor could do for his students. Because not everyone has the same learning rate, so, keeping patience and helping them with it would be a great way to tutor. What I think my strengths are that I explain a concept from very…

Make sure that you're not doing the work for them, only assisting them in their learning- For it will be them sitting the exam come the end of the year. By teaching them not only the subject matter but also the skills to mold themselves to every problem or question, you'll be instilling confidence in them that no matter what is introduced to them…

I believe the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to teach them how to teach themselves. Instead of spoon-feeding students the answers to specific questions, a good tutor helps students understand how to think to devise a solution for any problem they encounter. Being only 18 years old and currently in Year 12, I thoroughly…

The important thing that a tutor can give a student is time and attention which he might not get in classroom of students. Make the student feel the subject is not difficult by explaining concepts step wise. The tutor can also build self-confidence and problem-solving skills by making him approach the issue first and then guide the correct…

In my opinion, the most important thing a tutor can do for students is making sure that the student completely understands the concept and does not try to rote learn it. I believe that a tutor is a person who can change the point of view of a student through which they can grasp the concept well and improves their understanding ability. I own…

It's to be able to notice the reasons behind my students' struggle and find out the right method and the right way to help them make adjustments and become better at it. Encourage students to step out of their comfort zone and face their academic weaknesses head-on. Strengthen students' confidence in the subject matter. As a tutor, I believe it is critical for providing a space for students to not be afraid to be wrong and foster engagement. A tutor must allow students to think for themselves and provide prompts which enable more critical and deeper thinking. A tutor must be able to understand the different needs for each student and be able to provide the…

Inside St PetersTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 9 student Sarah worked through solving linear equations and then practiced using indices in algebraic expressions.

Year 10 student Jack focused on understanding the unit circle for trigonometry, as well as reviewing his recent exam questions together for clarity.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily explored exponential graphs and tackled problems involving surds and powers, including expanding algebraic expressions step by step.

Recent Challenges

A Year 9 student often struggled to translate worded problems into algebraic equations, needing repeated reminders to "write out every step of the equation." This led to confusion between addition and multiplication when working with formulas.

In a senior Maths Methods session, one student hesitated to start multi-part questions without prompts, which slowed progress on complex topics like trigonometric equations. As noted by a tutor: "He got tangled in his thoughts even though he knew the answer."

For a Year 4 learner, difficulties organizing materials meant lesson time was spent searching for past problems instead of consolidating new concepts.

Recent Achievements

One St Peters tutor noticed a Year 9 student who, after initially getting most of his homework fractions wrong, was able to solve them accurately in-session and even tackled a bonus question with barely any help—something he'd struggled with before.

In a recent high school session, another student who used to skip over explaining his reasoning is now confidently talking through probability questions step by step, making fewer mistakes along the way.

Meanwhile, during a Year 4 lesson, a student eager to try multiplication exercises stopped relying on her times tables chart and got most answers correct on her own.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Walkerville Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like East Adelaide School.
