The most important thing a tutor can do for their students is help them teach skills that they can apply lifelong. These skills includes ways to analyse, think, problem-solve. Also, teaching students skills to how to write notes, practice questions and how to study in general. My strengths as a tutor is being able to evaluate my teaching…

I believe going the extra mile to ensure that a student has the proper understanding is primordial. In the past, I have dealt with tough students with patience and empathy, clearing my students’ doubts and making them gain an in – depth understanding of the subject. I prefer to portray myself more a friend than a tutor and reassure my students…

A believe an effective tutor will support a student in a way that will eventually leave them comfortable, confident and prepared enough to no longer need the help of a tutor. However, I understand that this process may be a matter of weeks for some students and a matter of years for others. I think being a good tutor relies upon a variety of…

A tutor, i believe, “should†(rather than just “canâ€) keep the learner relaxed. They should ensure that the learner fully understands every concept in stages (what i like to call ‘staged implementation’). I also believe that a tutor should go through the basics thoroughly before jumping into potentially more complex…

A tutor should try to think like a student tutor should try to get into the child’s mind, mostly a tutor should try to bend according to the child’s need because if a tutor is just like a machine then they won’t be able to critically analyse where the child is unable to grasp the knowledge so it’s very very important that a tutor should…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be patient and understanding. Giving the student the tools and forming the basis to improve themselves is crucial. I think forming the student's understanding for answering any sort of question whether it be in English or Maths is necessary for achieving marks that most students cannot gain. While for maths a lot of the questions are based around simply using a formula,…

Finding the gaps, especially when they are gaps from prior in the scaffolding process that will only amplify over time. Sometimes it is important to take a step or two backwards in that case and often that results in a quicker grasp of current concepts. Paying attention to the small things that make maths (or English) learning enjoyable or not for…

A tutor provides personalised attention to a child which helps children learn at their own individual pace. Learning at one's own individual pace helps people connect with the subject with much more depth and explore the application of the theory that is being imparted to him. Inside StrathmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Oliver focused on mean, median, and mode as well as constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jessica worked through comparative text essays by exploring themes, linking similarities and differences between texts, and using specific examples with quotes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben reviewed momentum and energy concepts in Physics, discussing problem-solving strategies relevant to his current lessons.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was encouraged to spend time double-checking his working and answers in algebra, but layout issues meant "he confuses himself" when setting out solutions—this led to missed values that slowed progress.

In English (Year 11), the focus shifted to making writing more cohesive; integrating similarities into each paragraph instead of blocking ideas made the work feel less forced but required effortful reformatting.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with maintaining motivation after errors in fractions, sometimes getting visibly annoyed before regaining focus.

One lesson ended with misplaced decimals on division tasks, leaving confusion over final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Strathmore noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who previously struggled to spot an author's contention—now she pinpoints arguments and techniques without prompting.

Another high schooler, Leon, used to rely on step-by-step help for statistics but this week read data and built plots on his own before accurately calculating the mean and range.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated with fractions surprised her tutor by quickly adding unlike denominators independently, then showing her work aloud as she explained each step.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Delila is a delight! She has established a great rapport with Isabella in the two lessons so far; and has expressed a commitment to helping Isabella in the long term. She has a lovely personality; and Isabella really really likes her already. I could not be more pleased.

Hi Tristan, Thank you for tutoring Macgregor, I have often found it difficult to motivate him to do homework and I have found your calm encouraging and persistent approach works very well with him. You are really great at keeping him engaged and focused at the same time, and work very well with him. You follow everything through in a sound, structured and well thought out way. I find your approach very professional. I have also found you very flexible and reliable and adapt to whatever Macgregor needs. Most importantly, Macgregor loves working with you and enjoys the way work with him. I look forward to seeing you continue to work with Macgregor next term.

Kai is really enjoying his lessons with Noah! He's got a great way of connecting with Kai. Kai mentioned that Noah explains the reasons instead of doing things by rote. He gets him to think before explaining the answer. Very happy with him!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Strathmore Primary School.
