I feel the most important thing that a tutor can do is to listen to the students as they explain what they don't understand and to help fully explain the solution of the problem to the student and to verify that the students understands the new concepts. I am patient with the students and I can work through many examples with the student until he…

Being able to formulate different approaches on the go is something a tutor should be able to do in order for the students to understand at their own pace. A tutor should also be patient in order to make the student feel welcomed whenever they are in a predicament academically. Other than that, a tutor should be friendly so the students feel…

I believe be able to help students in study is one important thing. However helping them emotionally and in life could be essential for them. As they might have had a bad day at school or didn’t get good marks in exams. There’s few things I believe that’s more important than study. I believe I can help kids understanding a concept during…

Give time, especially more before the exam. This is because that is the time when most of the problems about the subject come out. Also, the tutor needs to make sure that the student understood the topic. The tutor should be willing to explain the topic as many times as the students want to. I can adapt very quickly. I put myself in the shoes of…

I believe that it is paramount for a tutor to understand that every student learns differently and therefore may need a different approach to studying to achieve their goals. A tutor should ask their student how they learn best and implement this feedback into their approach to tutoring. Similarly, it is important to understand that each student…

Inside StrathmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Oliver focused on mean, median, and mode as well as constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jessica worked through comparative text essays by exploring themes, linking similarities and differences between texts, and using specific examples with quotes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben reviewed momentum and energy concepts in Physics, discussing problem-solving strategies relevant to his current lessons.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was encouraged to spend time double-checking his working and answers in algebra, but layout issues meant "he confuses himself" when setting out solutions—this led to missed values that slowed progress.

In English (Year 11), the focus shifted to making writing more cohesive; integrating similarities into each paragraph instead of blocking ideas made the work feel less forced but required effortful reformatting.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with maintaining motivation after errors in fractions, sometimes getting visibly annoyed before regaining focus.

One lesson ended with misplaced decimals on division tasks, leaving confusion over final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Strathmore noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who previously struggled to spot an author's contention—now she pinpoints arguments and techniques without prompting.

Another high schooler, Leon, used to rely on step-by-step help for statistics but this week read data and built plots on his own before accurately calculating the mean and range.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated with fractions surprised her tutor by quickly adding unlike denominators independently, then showing her work aloud as she explained each step.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Sean has been a blessing, firstly gaining James trust and allowing him to open up in a safe environment and confront his difficulty with Maths, and then by showing him that math has practical uses and that there is nothing to fear. Without Sean's guidance James would not have progressed so far this year, and we are truly grateful. I wish Sean all the best with his studies and what I am sure will be a successful career.

Corey is enjoying his tutoring with Lital she motivates him and visually works with materials for him which seems to be working. He has only had 3 sessions so over time hoping to see some success.

Kirra is really benefiting from Payal already so we are very pleased! Exams start next week so hopefully just her confidence boost will help and then by Nov she should really see results. Thank you once again!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Strathmore Primary School.
