A tutor must help a student reach their greatest potential. A tutor must understand their student's skillful areas and utilize them to the best of their abilities. A tutor must understand their student's strengths and weaknesses and tailor the lessons around the weaknesses. I am very good at communication and treat my students as friends. I make…

I believe every student has the potential to become their best self. In addition to providing emotional support, I believe tutors should actively support students' dreams by helping them set clear and achievable goals. For example, the SMART technique allows students to track their progress, which promotes independence and self-directed learning.…

I think the most important thing a student can do for a student is to personally assist and direct their teaching towards the specific needs of the student. I believe a tutor should also be very patient and understanding, and be persistent as there are so many different ways to teach and explain concepts. I believe a student should never leave a…

I see a tutor as someone who can motivate students to learn and build the students' confidence to recognize their strengths. Like planting a tree, it may take sometime for teaching to be rewarding but it has a great impact as a tutor get a chance to contribute to a positive change in students' life. I see myself as a communicative, friendly,…

Important things: 1. To be well prepared for sessions; 2. To strive to develop a connection with the student. Such connection would enable the student to feel comfortable sharing his challenges; 3. Feel enthusiastic about the subject. Such enthusiasm can be contagious which would increase the student’s interest and make him more earnest in…

From my previous experience teaching a lot of students. The most vital point the student wants from their mentor is compassion and sympathy to connect with them. Once I can connect with them, I can understand at what level they are currently in and use the best method to help them strive to the best possible level they can achieve for the given…

To build a positive professional yet a meaningful relationship with the student. The student sees me as a friend and mentor rather than just a teacher. The most important things a tutor can do for a student are to have patience and be willing to share their own experience. Firstly, being patient is essential. A good tutor should learn not to show annoyance in their speech or body language as young people, especially children, can quickly grasp negative emotions. It might make them feel worried…

One of the most vital things a tutor should do is ensure that he is understood teaching-wise and that he understands his pupils perfectly. One thing that some teachers don't have is empathy for the unique condition of a student. A student's ability to learn can be affected in various ways, like by his surroundings and so on. It is significantly…

Flexibility and Patience are the two strengths of mine. I adjust myself to the different learning…

Paying attention on them. A student sometimes have fear and won't ask their doubts. As tutors we must pay attention to them and see what they need. If not the students won't achieve their goals. As I have mentioned above, every student's different capabilities and strategies to learn in their own way need to be considered before even beginning to tutor them. If a tutor teaches without having this in mind, there are chances that even after months of teaching, the student will not grasp the information as well as he/she probably could if…

Student's improvement. I would like to raise the student's attitude toward the subject by , for example, giving them the applications and examples of the theories. If the tutor doesn’t listen to a student or understand their struggles with certain areas, how could the tutor expect good results from their student? I believe I am very clear and concise with what I teach, and that because of my openly…

Inside StrathmoreTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Oliver focused on mean, median, and mode as well as constructing and interpreting stem-and-leaf plots.

In Year 10, Jessica worked through comparative text essays by exploring themes, linking similarities and differences between texts, and using specific examples with quotes.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Ben reviewed momentum and energy concepts in Physics, discussing problem-solving strategies relevant to his current lessons.

Recent Challenges

A Year 10 student was encouraged to spend time double-checking his working and answers in algebra, but layout issues meant "he confuses himself" when setting out solutions—this led to missed values that slowed progress.

In English (Year 11), the focus shifted to making writing more cohesive; integrating similarities into each paragraph instead of blocking ideas made the work feel less forced but required effortful reformatting.

Meanwhile, a Year 7 student struggled with maintaining motivation after errors in fractions, sometimes getting visibly annoyed before regaining focus.

One lesson ended with misplaced decimals on division tasks, leaving confusion over final answers.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Strathmore noticed a big shift with one Year 10 student who previously struggled to spot an author's contention—now she pinpoints arguments and techniques without prompting.

Another high schooler, Leon, used to rely on step-by-step help for statistics but this week read data and built plots on his own before accurately calculating the mean and range.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who once hesitated with fractions surprised her tutor by quickly adding unlike denominators independently, then showing her work aloud as she explained each step.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Moonee Valley Libraries—or at your child's school (with permission), like Strathmore Primary School.
