A tutor should realize that once upon a time, they themselves were a student who must have struggled with certain subjects and also fared well in certain other subjects. And they should realize from their own experience how much of a difference can a good teacher bring into the lives of students. A good tutor will leverage their own experience as…

To me, it is very important to make sure that my students are comfortable with the materials and the teaching speed, so they would be more willing to open up and learn, rather than pressuring them to study. I'm very flexible when it comes to teaching styles and communication. It has never occurred to me that one way of learning fit all. If I need…

Encourage and support them to keep tackling whatever work or problems they have. Solving the problem or giving them the answer won't help them learn or teach them anything. And even if they get the answers wrong or never really understand a question, they at least tried and they have learned to work hard and think about different ways of solving…

Tutors can't do the work for the students. Therefore, guiding students along the right path is the most important thing a maths tutor can do for a student. This happens in many different forms, like giving them advice, answering their questions and going over content again with them in a way that they can understand and learn from. As a recent…

I believe tutors should prioritize helping students develop a deep understanding of content, rather than relying on rote memorization. This approach encourages critical thinking and enables students to apply their knowledge to more complex problems. Additionally, creating a positive, supportive environment that is tailored to the student's needs…

Fantastic help to my daughter across biology and maths. As well as the technical aspect has been brilliant for her confidence in the HSC year. Highly recommended.

Inside Summer HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and consolidating times tables knowledge.

In Year 8, Sam worked through solving trigonometric equations with domain restrictions and explored the general domain and range of functions using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practiced finding intersections of linear lines by solving simultaneous equations and reinforced skills in graphing linear equations accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 trigonometry, skipping the combination of transformations and domain/range meant errors crept into graphing tasks—"struggled to combine and utilise both transformations," a tutor observed.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot algebraic simplification rules, especially when incorrectly canceling terms, slowing progress on simultaneous equations.

For a Year 6 learner, confusion about measurement conversions persisted; even after practice, confidence lagged when converting units in problem sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt worded problems independently and stayed quiet when confused in probability lessons. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and slower growth in reasoning skills.

Recent Achievements

A Summer Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to get distracted is now working through macroeconomics discussion questions with genuine focus and is contributing ideas, not just listening passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with simultaneous equations has started speaking up as soon as she's unsure—last session, she finished all her graphing problems without prompting.

In primary years, one student who would often guess at answers in maths is now stopping to check his reasoning out loud before moving on; last lesson he completed his entire perimeter worksheet correctly.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Delila is a delight! She has established a great rapport with Isabella in the two lessons so far; and has expressed a commitment to helping Isabella in the long term. She has a lovely personality; and Isabella really really likes her already. I could not be more pleased.

Hi Tristan, Thank you for tutoring Macgregor, I have often found it difficult to motivate him to do homework and I have found your calm encouraging and persistent approach works very well with him. You are really great at keeping him engaged and focused at the same time, and work very well with him. You follow everything through in a sound, structured and well thought out way. I find your approach very professional. I have also found you very flexible and reliable and adapt to whatever Macgregor needs. Most importantly, Macgregor loves working with you and enjoys the way work with him. I look forward to seeing you continue to work with Macgregor next term.

Kai is really enjoying his lessons with Noah! He's got a great way of connecting with Kai. Kai mentioned that Noah explains the reasons instead of doing things by rote. He gets him to think before explaining the answer. Very happy with him!

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
