I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is clarifying and reviewing a piece of information they are trying to learn and understand, while instilling a useful learning strategy. Also increasing the level of knowledge so their confidence level increases and hence allowing them to improve at school. Patience would be a strength…

Being able to tutor the students complicated concepts but also help students balance their school life with the possible stress that goes with it. I believe going through school with a relaxed and stressless mind set can produce amazing results for the students. One of my strengths is my ability to understand concepts through the student's point…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is creating a safe learning space where the student feels comfortable with asking any questions about their work. At university, I find that some tutors can be very harsh and cold which makes it difficult for me to ask questions out of fear of humiliation, so I make an effort to show my care,…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to be able to explain concepts in various ways and use examples from other subject areas such as physics, music, economics, etc. I also believe the tutor should be able to support and encourage the student in a friendly manner, but should also push the student because often they are…

A tutor needs to be adaptive of the environment. She/he needs to be precise were needed and elaborate when necessary. On thing to keep in mind to never lose patience, especially with younger kids. You need to practice what you preach. Secondly, discipline is the most important factor for success in life. The first lesson a teacher needs to teach…

I think it's important for a tutor build a connection based on mutual respect with their student. It's also essential to understand how the student consumes knowledge and build the curriculum around it. I come from a diverse background and have been very observant of the people around me. Especially for younger students, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create a sturdy foundation in terms of their learning. Without a good understanding of fundamental topics, it would be difficult for any student to continue improving their learning abilities. Additionally, it would also be important for tutors to help students develop…

Consider the student's strong side and encourage it but not at the expense of the weak side. And accept that how long it take for one to learn is not the factor as long as they learn. Patience is something i always try to exercise while teaching as everyone has their own pace and strengths and weaknesses. I believe an keen sense of observation…

1. Be prepared. As a tutor, it is my responsibility to be prepared for the session. That includes preparing the lesson beforehand and getting everything ready. 2. Develop their understanding of the subject. This means ensuring they understand the process and the mechanism behind a math calculation for example. This will boost their confidence in being able to answer harder questions that require this skill. Particularly for maths, the harder questions are situated in Q15 and Q16. Attaining marks in this…

This enables a student to be provided with specific feedback and assistance of their areas for improvement or difficulties. Understanding the strengths an weaknesses of a student is the most important…

Fantastic help to my daughter across biology and maths. As well as the technical aspect has been brilliant for her confidence in the HSC year. Highly recommended.

Inside Summer HillTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Ruby focused on multiplying fractions by whole numbers and consolidating times tables knowledge.

In Year 8, Sam worked through solving trigonometric equations with domain restrictions and explored the general domain and range of functions using graphs.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Jack practiced finding intersections of linear lines by solving simultaneous equations and reinforced skills in graphing linear equations accurately.

Recent Challenges

In Year 11 trigonometry, skipping the combination of transformations and domain/range meant errors crept into graphing tasks—"struggled to combine and utilise both transformations," a tutor observed.

A Year 9 student repeatedly forgot algebraic simplification rules, especially when incorrectly canceling terms, slowing progress on simultaneous equations.

For a Year 6 learner, confusion about measurement conversions persisted; even after practice, confidence lagged when converting units in problem sets.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student hesitated to attempt worded problems independently and stayed quiet when confused in probability lessons. This led to missed opportunities for feedback and slower growth in reasoning skills.

Recent Achievements

A Summer Hill tutor noticed a Year 11 student who used to get distracted is now working through macroeconomics discussion questions with genuine focus and is contributing ideas, not just listening passively.

Meanwhile, a Year 9 student who previously hesitated to ask for help with simultaneous equations has started speaking up as soon as she's unsure—last session, she finished all her graphing problems without prompting.

In primary years, one student who would often guess at answers in maths is now stopping to check his reasoning out loud before moving on; last lesson he completed his entire perimeter worksheet correctly.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashfield Municipal Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Patrick's Catholic Primary School.
