The most important thing would be to connect with the student, be on the same wavelength. If you can connect with your student then you can understand their struggles learning the content. It also allows the student to be more relaxed and less stressed which aids in their learning. If they see the process of getting tutored as a chore or a burden…

A tutor can encourage a student that they can do it. There is no word as no. Teacher's need to imbibe confidence in students especially those who are failing to acheive and give them a reason to do well in their studies. Teacher's need to be patient as well. These are some of my strengths: Patience Kindness Sense of…

The most important thing is to drive their learning process and help them understand key concepts through a medium conducive to their learning style. Its also by creating a safe environment where the student feels like they can ask you any question without fear, as this sometimes is not possible in a classroom or group setting I am very patient,…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to boost up their confidence, because it's essential for the student to perform well under exam condition as well as during tutoring or class. And many students tends to lose focus, or go mind blank during exams due to a lack of confidence. In addition, it is extremely important for a tutor…

Tutoring is more than just teaching content, it's about teaching a person. And that requires understanding, compassion and patience. I understand, that a good tutor is intelligent and knowledgeable. However, a great tutor is one which is able to listen, understand and empathise. A great tutor should be able to place themselves in the shoes of…

A tutor teaches different tactics to the students to solve mathematics in the simplest ways possible. A tutor should be extremely patient and understanding instead of being strict. A tutor should share their own experiences with the student so that the student can avoid encountering the bad experiences the tutor had and try to follow the teachings…

I think the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is inspiring them into studying. This is done by helping them understand the knowledge and get used to solving problems that they feel confident rather than daunting towards the subject. In my opinion, the most valuable thing that a tutor can do for the student is to bring his/her interest to learn about anything in academic subjects. Most of the students nowadays are more keen on social media postings and playing online games. Sometimes, they forgot how important the academic knowledge in their lives. So, bring back the student's…

To engage their student in what they are being taught. Often, it is easy for tutors to treat teaching as a rote-memory recitation of their materials, without actually using other analogies and connective methods that students benefit from. If a tutor is unwilling to invest energy into their lessons, a student likewise will gain little enrichment.…

For the student to be able to see me as someone he/she can rely upon. I say this because I was not very good at mathematics but when I had a tutor at the start of year 8, she was always friendly and made it very easy to talk to her. It was because of her that I now want to be a tutor, she instilled disciplines which I am proud of today, while…

Tutors must have a solid passion to teach, including taking time to understand different ways to teach or provide content, or developing their own skills to allow students to understand a subject. A tutor should aim to see improved results provided the student puts work in to improve. Seeing results can develop encouragement and self-fulfilment…

Not to force feed content, but take an approach from a different angle of two if the first method does not work. Some understand content from different view points while some get it first try. The most important thing is helping someone develop a passion for the subject so that they want to learn more. Studying for exams can get very stressful and students forget the joy of learning something and their natural curiosity. If a tutor can help a student retain even a small percentage of that, its an amazing achievement. Most of the…

I value tutors as being mentors who students look up to for advice and as a role model, whilst revealing a students' true potential which in turn improves self-confidence and self-esteem. For instance, I think the evolving of students' enjoyment towards subjects, even ever so slightly, is one of the most valuable things an inspiring and supportive…

Inside Sydney Olympic ParkTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 4 student completed a Maths Olympiad worksheet and workbook activities focusing on addition and subtraction with two- to four-digit numbers, as well as starting multiplication with larger numbers.

Year 9 student Alyssa tackled direct variation in linear relationships and practiced rearranging formulas for simple interest calculations using real-life examples.

For Year 12, David worked through differentiation techniques including the product and quotient rules, and was introduced to inverse trigonometric functions such as arcsin(x) and arccos(x).

Recent Challenges

A Year 3 student often hesitated when writing out division steps, preferring to "do it in his mind," which led to misaligned digits and confusion about which number belonged above the line—"he needs to write every step," noted one tutor.

In Year 11 Mathematics, a student avoided writing full working for induction proofs and struggled with linking nk and nk+1, causing repeated errors in logical progression.

Meanwhile, a Year 12 student's revision focused only on familiar trigonometric formulas, leaving gaps when tackling exam questions that required lesser-known identities or domains. This resulted in uncertainty during multi-step problems and slowed progress under time pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in Sydney Olympic Park noticed that one Year 11 student who previously hesitated to ask for clarification now regularly voices questions about tricky derivatives, especially when working with inverse trigonometric functions—a real shift from staying silent and guessing.

In another high school session, a student managed to identify the critical path in a complex network diagram after struggling to visualise connections just weeks ago.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who often made errors with subtraction recently completed an entire quiz on addition and subtraction without a single mistake and even tackled some harder problems by choice.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Lidcombe Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Newington Public School.
