A tutor has the opportunity to shape a students' mind, in more ways than one. Therefore, the most important thing a tutor can do is to make the best use of this opportunity and let the student discover the best version of themselves. I believe I am very patient, which is an important quality for any tutor. I do not mind even if I have to explain…

A tutor must be able to understand the student's perspective. Students think in unique ways and a good tutor should encourage that level of thinking. A tutor must also be equipped enough to answer any out-of-syllabus questions that students may have. A good tutor should encourage an inquisitive mindset among their students. I strive to do these…

To me, a tutor must be able to effectively communicate ideas to students in a manner that allows them to understand the concept. Understanding of more conceptually difficult topics is a difficulty every student faces and is ultimately the barrier against marks. Being able to really connect with a student and portray the idea at hand in a manner in…

The most important thing a tutor can do for a student is highlight their strengths as a learner. I don't want students to think they need a tutor because they need help and feel badly about their current academic performance. I want students to have control over their learning when it comes to choices, activities, and material. Students should…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to provide them with individual assistance that they lack in regular school time, and personal attention, ensuring they understand key concepts. I think the most important thing a tutor can offer to a younger student is their experience, similar to that of a mentor. Beyond course content, tutors can draw from their study, career and life experiences to help the student navigate their path. I am proud of my ability to teach and explain concepts to others effectively and thoroughly, which I…

I believe that a tutor can be a great companion and listening ear for students, beyond ensuring a lateral transfer and teaching of information. Having traversed the same path, they can also be a mentor and guide students on a potentially confusing educational journey. A tutor's reassurance is therefore very important as it can create a more…

I think that taking the time to really understand the student's needs and being able to break down the problem into its smallest components really helps to understand exactly where the student is going wrong, and how to help them. Once I understand where the student is struggling, I can focus on practicing that concept until they are comfortable…

The most important things a tutor can do for a student is to encourage them to ask lots of questions, and be a mentor on top of being a tutor. A tutors primary task is to help the student with what they want to be helped with, and as a part of that accommodating to their individual needs and goals. Doing anything else would simply be disingenuous. It is worth noting further that accommodating to the student's needs in any way reasonable is quite close to the most important thing a tutor…

The most important thing would be to create a safe space for students, so they will feel welcomed and understood. This can build their confidence as well. EzyMath Tutoring has been a wonderful experience for us. It was easy to organise in my busy schedule and convenient as the tutor comes to us at time that works. My son connected with his tutor from the get go and it was great to know EziMath Tutoring are always supportive with any questions I had. I thought the fees were very reasonable.

Inside TamaramaTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 11 student Paolo worked on differentiating equations to find stationary points and applied the product, quotient, and chain rules to various functions, as well as tackling definite and indefinite integration for area under curves.

Year 10 lessons with Emily included graphing trigonometric functions using the unit circle and breaking down formulas like Asin(nx+b)+C, plus exploring properties of cubics and hyperbolas through hands-on graphing exercises.

For a Year 8 student, recent sessions focused on mean, median, range, and interquartile range in statistics, alongside algebraic simplification involving unknowns in denominators.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student repeatedly arrived without completed homework, so lesson time was diverted to catching up rather than advancing ("homework from the previous week could not be checked as he could not find it").

In Year 11, a student avoided writing out working in unit conversion problems—opting to show only final answers. As a tutor noted, "he is only providing a final answer which is bad practice," making it hard to pinpoint misunderstandings and reinforce correct methods.

For another senior student, relying on memorizing steps instead of understanding (conversion tasks) meant new question types felt unfamiliar and slowed progress during revision sessions.

Recent Achievements

One Tamarama tutor noticed Jessy, a senior student, finally connecting tricky calculus concepts—after previously struggling with the product and quotient rules, she completed several differentiation questions independently, even handling inverse trig functions for the first time.

In another session, Tobey (Year 9) demonstrated a clear shift: he used to need step-by-step help with ratio word problems but now solves financial maths questions on his own and checks his work for errors without prompting.

Meanwhile, Lucas made tangible progress in algebra; after reviewing past mistakes on an exam paper together, he corrected every solution himself.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Waverley Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Bondi Public School.
