The most important things an english tutor can do are to listen to their students and respond accordingly when tutoring them. It is also important to encourage their abilities and help them to succeed. A tutor should also be there to encourage continuous learning and creating a positive learning environment. Relate. The student will understand the concept once it resonates with something the student is interested in. A tutor needs to describe the concept, demonstrate the concept and invite the student to attempt the concept. This open dialogue, dispelling fear of failure and welcoming the opportunity to learn is an important attribute an english…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is inspire and motivate. While these seem like simple elements, in successfully doing so, the tutor has essentially altered the learning experiences for the student from that moment onwards. The student is then able to develop their confidence in their subjects, push to achieve their…

I think the most important think an english tutor can do for a student is teach them to think independently and creatively. Support them. Sometimes students just need that boost of confidence and support to understand. Frustration in their own learning can often end up being the reason why a concept is not being understood. I was an inclusion support assistant at a primary school, working with various kids with learning difficulties and disabilities. This has given me…

The most important thing an english tutor can do for a student is to not only instruct, but listen. Having both been the tutee and the tutor, I believe that it is imperative that an english tutor is supportive of the student and caters their teaching to the student's specific needs. I think the most important aspect of being a tutor is to assist students in coming up with their own interpretations, especially in english, by expanding their skill set. By giving students the tools to succeed but letting them work through the problems first, it allows them to put forward any errors or miscommunications, which can then be…

I develop a strong bonding with my students 2. I try…

Having a strong internal drive to learn and micro-teaching skills I think is the key role in tutoring. Micro-skill is the second…

Inside The GapTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 5 student Will focused on factor trees and their use in multiplication, then reviewed basic algebra concepts.

For Year 8, Viran worked through exam revision by tackling a mix of basic, application, and complex problems across recent topics.

Meanwhile, Year 9 student Lauren practiced finding the area and perimeter for a housing plan assignment, using real-world measurements to apply geometric reasoning.

Recent Challenges

A Year 11 student repeatedly avoided asking for help until prompted, especially in algebra and electrical engineering—"he finds it really difficult to know where to begin"—leading to missed opportunities for feedback and slower progress on homework.

In a Year 8 lesson, the lack of clear written working in equations caused confusion when revisiting earlier steps; messy notes made it hard to track mistakes or improvements.

One Year 3 student still counted with fingers and rushed addition tasks, which resulted in frequent errors and frustration during basic arithmetic practice.

Senior students sometimes submitted assignments with incomplete or context-lacking notes, making revision more challenging later on.

Recent Achievements

One The Gap tutor noticed a high school student, Viran, has shifted from needing repeated prompting to now asking for help independently as soon as he's stuck—he used to wait quietly or guess.

Another older student, Rurari, who previously took minimal notes and stayed quiet during sessions, is now actively taking detailed notes and regularly asks questions to clarify concepts like the Unit Circle.

In a recent primary session, Tara moved beyond just identifying fractions; she can now confidently explain fraction equivalence and represent them visually without hesitation.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Ashgrove Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like The Gap State High School.
