Tutors should be able to provide students motivation, assistance and inspiration in all aspects of the learning environment. As someone who is still studying, I believe I am able to easily connect and communicate with students and be able to relate with them. This support will assist in building confidence. I definitely have the mathematical…

I believe a great tutor goes beyond just increasing a student's marks- they are able to act as a mentor and oversee a student's education holistically. For example, I also guided one of my previous students through his year 12 year, helping him with the university admissions process and scholarship applications, where he is now studying…

The biggest thing a tutor can do for a student is to be encouraging and respectful, cultivating a safe environment in which they feel that they can pose questions and share answers without fear of judgement. In doing so, it makes the intake of knowledge easier and an overall more enjoyable experience. A tutor must also show a genuine interest in…

Inside The JunctionTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Olivia practised solving single-variable algebraic equations by isolating x and worked on factorising simple expressions, including examples with terms in the denominator.

For Year 9, Ethan reviewed operations with fractions before focusing on indices—writing out rules, solving sample problems, and simplifying mixed-rule expressions.

Meanwhile, Year 10 student James concentrated on financial maths concepts like depreciation and shares & dividend yield, progressing to more challenging questions and integrating compound interest calculations.

Recent Challenges

In Year 10, Danika's confidence dropped after a tough practice test; she mixed up algebraic processes and sometimes didn't recognise which method to use. "She didn't believe me when I told her some of the rules!" noted one tutor, highlighting hesitation with foundational steps.

In senior financial maths, Liz often relied on formulas without understanding the underlying concepts—when presented with an unfamiliar worded question, she tended to input numbers mechanically rather than break down what was being asked.

For Lara in Year 8, written work lacked structure; while most working was recorded, order and clarity made it hard to check for errors or retrace steps under pressure.

Recent Achievements

A tutor in The Junction recently noticed Danika, a high school student, taking real initiative by flagging tricky algebra questions in her notebook to discuss during lessons—something she never did before.

Liz, also in high school, has started confidently explaining her reasoning on z-score and normal distribution problems, even teaching back her method when the tutor was unsure—a big shift from her earlier hesitation to speak up.

Meanwhile, Lara (Year 5) recalled all the formulas for distance-speed-time without prompts and completed several new scenario problems independently after previously needing lots of reminders.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Hi Erica, thank you for your email. Things have started well with Jacob and hopefully they will continue in the same way. I think in this case, the difference for Jamie is that she can ask Jacob about a problem that she is struggling with and he can answer her straight away. Vivian was able to answer her too but it took her longer and I think the time factor was what was frustrating Jamie. As I'm sure you are aware in year 12 there is such a time crunch that any delays just add more pressure.

Hi Erica Thanks for the email. Yes, everything is going very well. Daniel is finding Yuta to be very helpful and has definitely been able to identify areas of weakness that require work. We are all very pleased with the progress to date.

Morgan has responded very well already with Hazel.  She said her explanations of problems has made her maths much more easier. We are very happy with Hazel.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Newcastle Region Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like St Joseph's Primary School.
