I believe that the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is to not teach them how to answer a specific question but to ensure they understand the logic behind the answering methodology. I suspect that this may be hard for some students at first but I am confident that they will be able to get the most out of mathematics and other…

The first greatest thing that tutor can do for a student is serve as a ladder for the student to progress to next level of life in any kind of circumstances and letting students to take challenges as an opportunity. I believe ultimately, the most important thing a tutor can do is to create an environment where when asked "Do you understand?", the student feels free to say "Nope". This honesty is priceless and very helpful in identifying knowledge-gaps early. I pride myself on being patient. I was a slow learner, and often had questions which were ignored or…

The most important thing that anyone can do for their student is to have them realise that everyone started where they are starting, nobody was born knowing anything, and just because you don't understand a concept now, doesn't mean you won't ever understand it. My strength come from the way I approach a student, I work with them, and build on…

The clever tutor can know whether the student understands the information or not. He should get that without waiting for the student to tell him. As a result, he should redeliver the information but in a new way. I usually link between the theory and its application. I am interested in finding new interactive tutoring strategies. I try to deliver…

I believe that a tutor should not just provide answers to a problem, the most important thing a tutor can do for a student is teach them how to think to solve problems. This is why teaching maths or physics should go beyond drilling procedures, formulas and theorems into a student's head - tutors should encourage students to develop a wholesome…

Facilitate the comprehension of the concepts studied, a tutor is not there to do the homework by himself but rather to show a better way to do it and to provide help in understanding the concepts needed to carry out a homework or while studying for an exam. Very closely tied to this is the building of the student, edifying the student if you…

A tutor can not only help the students stay motivated but they can also help the students build great study habits that will help them for a lifetime. Their influence can never stop and that's really important. Students, especially the ones who struggle a lot need a motivator to stay on top of their goals without giving up. That's something a…

I think that the most important thing a tutor can do is give a student confidence in themselves. It is not the tutor's job to simply pass on their own knowledge, but rather to show the student that they had the ability to excel on their own all along. Tutors can do this by explaining concepts in a new way or more slowly than they may have been…

Inside The RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Maya worked on plotting graphs and identifying x- and y-intercepts, as well as understanding linear relationships through visual examples.

Year 10 student Alex focused on solving advanced trigonometry questions from a recent test and reviewed polynomials in chapter 22b.1 for deeper algebraic skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily practiced expanding and factorising quadratic expressions before tackling worded problems involving algebraic fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student needed frequent reminders to finish written DI work and left parts of assignments incomplete, which led to confusion during revision.

In Year 11 English, reluctant to explain effect on audience and often did not link back to topic sentence, making it hard for ideas to develop into full arguments.

A Year 9 learner forgot key steps in long division and avoided double-checking, so errors persisted across sessions.

Another senior student was not fully prepared for the test on domain and range—missing notes meant time was spent re-learning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One tutor in The Rocks noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples but now solves algebraic fraction problems independently, showing real independence.

A Year 12 student, after struggling to organise her ideas, managed to write a detailed speech plan unprompted—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started putting her hand up when stuck and recently read an entire short paragraph aloud with only one prompt for support.

What they say about our tutoring

quote

Since Ben has had Jacques tutoring, he has achieved an A++ (15/15) for his maths assignment!!!

Zach and Chaitanya are doing really well. Zach is really happy, not only with the way he's learning, but also because Chaitanya takes an interest in him as well.

Dakshi is a wonderful tutor and I feel that she and Aela are getting on very well.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
