Support their discovery of the subject they have a difficulty in understanding. NOT to think for them, instead, challenge them to use their own capacity to think solutions and have the unlimited courage to make mistakes and learn from them. My strengths as a tutor include patience, perseverance and insight into the misunderstandings and challenges…

Building confidence is the most important thing a tutor can possibly do for a student. It's very important for a tutor to listen a student's worry points and problems and guide him accordingly to overcome them without breaking his confidence. It's necessary to be a good mentor and help students just not academically but advice them on any…

I believe that the two most important things a tutor can do for a student is to have both sympathy and empathy when approaching difficult concepts, in order to prevent a student from giving up, in addition to being organised and prepared. My greatest strengths as a tutor lie in my patience with others, my ability to explain difficult concepts in a…

I think one of the most important things a tutor can do is create a comfortable and supportive environment where the student feels confident to ask questions and make mistakes. Learning really happens when students feel safe to try, even if they don’t get it right the first time. A tutor should also explain things in a way that makes sense to…

I think the most important thing for a tutor to do for a student is make sure they not only know but actually understand the content, like having knowledge on a deeper meaning, so in a test if you face a nuanced question, you are able to solve it due to your in-depth understanding of the content. I was tutored in highschool which has allowed me to…

To make students enjoy the classes, and want them to learn more and get interested in the subject. Classes should not be seen as a boring compulsory activities, in constrast, they should be the channel to make students wiser and more independent. A tutor should be a good listener in order to understand the problem that a student is facing. Identify the student's strengths , their interests and translate into learning. Give the student the foundational skills to excel on the own once outside of tutoring. A good tutor will be able to get their student to a level where they feel competent to work by themselves, and know both how to solve a problem, and why we approach the problem the way we do. A tutor should always motivate students to try their hardest, and also engage them into the subject as much possible. The tutor should have the knowledge of what they are teaching, as that would not cause any hindrance while the child is in the learning phase. Ultimately, I think a good tutor teaches the student skills that they can utilize in their general learning and subject specific study. A tutor should be in a position to be a mentor to the student and share their experience in relation to studying their subject. This can help the student overcome what can initially be a daunting task as it is a…

Inside The RocksTutoring Sessions

Content Covered

Year 8 student Maya worked on plotting graphs and identifying x- and y-intercepts, as well as understanding linear relationships through visual examples.

Year 10 student Alex focused on solving advanced trigonometry questions from a recent test and reviewed polynomials in chapter 22b.1 for deeper algebraic skills.

Meanwhile, Year 11 student Emily practiced expanding and factorising quadratic expressions before tackling worded problems involving algebraic fractions.

Recent Challenges

A Year 8 student needed frequent reminders to finish written DI work and left parts of assignments incomplete, which led to confusion during revision.

In Year 11 English, reluctant to explain effect on audience and often did not link back to topic sentence, making it hard for ideas to develop into full arguments.

A Year 9 learner forgot key steps in long division and avoided double-checking, so errors persisted across sessions.

Another senior student was not fully prepared for the test on domain and range—missing notes meant time was spent re-learning rather than building new skills.

Recent Achievements

One tutor in The Rocks noticed a big shift with a Year 9 student who used to rely heavily on worked examples but now solves algebraic fraction problems independently, showing real independence.

A Year 12 student, after struggling to organise her ideas, managed to write a detailed speech plan unprompted—something she'd avoided before.

Meanwhile, a Year 4 student who was hesitant to ask for help has started putting her hand up when stuck and recently read an entire short paragraph aloud with only one prompt for support.

Local Spots for Tutoring

If you'd prefer not to have lessons at home, tutoring can also take place at a local library—such as Customs House Library—or at your child's school (with permission), like Observatory Hill Environmental Education Centre.
